{"id":10310,"date":"2020-10-09T20:47:43","date_gmt":"2020-10-10T03:47:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/?p=10310"},"modified":"2020-10-09T21:04:32","modified_gmt":"2020-10-10T04:04:32","slug":"twinkle-twinkle-little-star","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/index.php\/2020\/10\/09\/twinkle-twinkle-little-star\/","title":{"rendered":"Twinkle, twinkle, little Star&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sometimes you just get lucky.\u00a0 That&#8217;s what happened to me.\u00a0 I&#8217;m buying a used snubnosed .38 Special (there will be a blog on it in a few weeks), and I used a different federal firearms license dealer for the transfer (I always buy through an FFL dealer to keep things legal).\u00a0 The seller had an FFL dealer he wanted to use, and much to my surprise it happened to be one of the rangemasters at the West End Gun Club (a guy I already knew).\u00a0 We all had a nice visit, and while I was there, I was looking around the shop and my eye turned to an old progressive reloader.\u00a0 I love old stuff, and if you&#8217;re reading this, you probably do, too.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-10312\" src=\"http:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/IMG_8478-600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"1039\" srcset=\"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/IMG_8478-600.jpg 600w, https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/IMG_8478-600-173x300.jpg 173w, https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/IMG_8478-600-591x1024.jpg 591w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now when I say progressive, I don&#8217;t mean the reloader leans left or votes democrat.\u00a0 Nope, progressive in the reloading world means each pull of the lever results in a finished round coming off the machine.\u00a0 With each stroke, a cartridge case is resized and deprimed, another is flared, another is charged with powder, another has a bullet seated in the brass case and crimped, and a new one is spit out.\u00a0 Then, on the lever upstroke, the base plate rotates (it progresses, hence the name), and the sequence continues.\u00a0 The output on a progressive is impressive.\u00a0 You can reload north of 500 rounds an hour on these things.<\/p>\n<p>This particular progressive is one of the first ones and it was made by a company called the Star Machine Works.\u00a0 They first came out in the 1930s.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t know exactly when mine was made, but it had my attention this morning and I guess that was obvious.\u00a0 My rangemaster buddy told I could take it home with me if I wanted.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;How much?&#8221; I asked.\u00a0 I think he could see that the hook was already set.\u00a0 I wanted it.\u00a0 And I guess it showed.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You could take it home with you.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think I will,&#8221;
