{"id":10445,"date":"2020-10-21T06:50:08","date_gmt":"2020-10-21T13:50:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/?p=10445"},"modified":"2020-10-21T07:16:31","modified_gmt":"2020-10-21T14:16:31","slug":"the-star-primer-feed-mechanism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/index.php\/2020\/10\/21\/the-star-primer-feed-mechanism\/","title":{"rendered":"The Star Primer Feed Mechanism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The next steps in bringing the Star progressive reloader back to life focused on the primer feed mechanism.\u00a0 That subsystem consists of the primer follower rod (the upper red arrow in the photo below), the primer magazine (the middle arrow in the photo below), the primer pickup and feed mechanism (the lower red arrow in the photo below), and the primer seating device (which is under the base of the reloader, as you&#8217;ll see further along in this blog).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10447\" src=\"http:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/20201013_0001-600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"899\" srcset=\"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/20201013_0001-600.jpg 600w, https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/20201013_0001-600-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In looking at the primer feed mechanism, the primer magazine , and the primer follower rod, I could see they were mighty funky and thoroughly oxidized.\u00a0 I wondered if they were all made of brass.\u00a0 The tip of the primer follower rod obviously was (see the photo below), and probably the feed mechanism base was, but the magazine tube and other parts were so corroded I couldn&#8217;t tell.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10448\" src=\"http:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/20201013_0003-600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"899\" srcset=\"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/20201013_0003-600.jpg 600w, https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/20201013_0003-600-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Then I realized I had another question.\u00a0 See the spring in the photo below?\u00a0 That one through me for a loop.\u00a0 I couldn&#8217;t see that it served any function, and all the online references I found for Star reloaders did not show it.\u00a0 \u00a0So I sent an email to my good buddy Bruce over at Star Machine Works (the outfit that restores and sells parts for Star equipment).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10449\" src=\"http:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/20201013_0004-600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/20201013_0004-600.jpg 600w, https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/20201013_0004-600-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Bruce responded quickly.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s what he told me:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Hi Joe,<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>The spring is a hitch hiker on your machine. Nothing to do with a Star.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Bruce<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A hitch hiker.\u00a0 That got a laugh.<\/p>\n<p>The primer pickup and feed mechanism (shown below) is what takes primers from the primer magazine and pushes them below the empty case.\u00a0 That L-shaped lever on the right?\u00a0 It&#8217;s the primer slide angle lever (shown by the lower arrow).\u00a0 It&#8217;s actuated when the primer feed cam (shown by the middle arrow) descends as the tool head is lowered on each stroke.\u00a0 The lever in turn actuates the primer slide in the feed mechanism (shown by the lower arrow), and that&#8217;s what picks up a primer from the magazine and positions it underneath the empty case.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter needs a way to be inserted into the case.\u00a0 The Star has a clever way of doing this that takes advantage of the fact that there&#8217;s a shaft in the tool head that descends with the tool head when the main lever is pulled.\u00a0 When the main lever is actuated and the tool head descends, the shaft fits through a hole in the shell plate and extends into the base of the reloader.\u00a0 The tip of the shaft pushes one end of a pivoted lever down, and that then pushes the other end of the lever up.\u00a0 That end actuates a plunger that seats the primer into the empty case.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s what the lever looks like underneath the reloader.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10569\" designed the Star was a mechanical genius.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a photo of the primer follower rod.\u00a0 It sits on top of a stack of primers in the primer magazine.\u00a0 Its weight pushes the primers down each time one is transferred from the primer magazine by the primer slide.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-10452 size-full\" to remove the tube from the primer feed mechanism.\u00a0 It doesn&#8217;t unscrew; it&#8217;s just a tight slip fit into the feed mechanism.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10453\" src=\"http:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/20201013_0009-600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" was made of brass.\u00a0 There were still a couple of primers in it.\u00a0 I doubt they would fire; they were probably soaked in oil.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full slide was pushed out by its spring.\u00a0 As I was disassembling the primer feed mechanism, I found that the primer slide still held a primer.\u00a0 These parts were pretty funky.\u00a0 In a working reloader, you don&#8217;t want any oil in this area.\u00a0 It will contaminate the primers and make them inert (we only want &#8220;ert&#8221; primers when reloading ammo).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10457\" src=\"http:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/20201013_0013-600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" machine had been rode hard and put away wet, I think.\u00a0 My spraying it down with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/WD-40-Multi-Use-Product-Smart-Sprays\/dp\/B084CQ4R8L\/?&amp;_encoding=UTF8&amp;tag=exhaustnotes-20&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;linkId=c524e06ac149af7d4d10e86334686a73&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WD 40<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=exhaustnotes-20&amp;l=ur2&amp;o=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/> to clean didn&#8217;t help in that regard.\u00a0 But it sure helped to clean up the Star.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10458\" src=\"http:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/20201013_0014-600.jpg\" 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I then unscrewed the two screws holding the primer magazine socket to the primer feed mechanism housing.\u00a0 Here are the parts in all their glorious mechanism base off the machine.\u00a0 It had two pins to locate it on the Star reloader&#8217;s base.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10462\" the primer feed mechanism attaches.\u00a0 The upper two arrows point to the Allen bolt attach points.\u00a0 The lower two arrows point to the locating holes (this is where the two pins mentioned above fit).\u00a0 The arrow in the middle points to the hole for the primer slide spring.\u00a0 The rectangular slot is where the primer slide enters the reloader base to position a new primer beneath a .38 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The steel base is a blued steel part.\u00a0 It&#8217;s just like the bluing on a gun.\u00a0 This is a pretty cool feature.\u00a0 There&#8217;s a fair amount of corrosion and discoloration on my Star, but it&#8217;s part of the machine&#8217;s charm.\u00a0 I hit it with some OOOO <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Red-Devil-0320-Steel-Super\/dp\/B001JYVDSE\/?&amp;_encoding=UTF8&amp;tag=exhaustnotes-20&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;linkId=3534bac60c68c23500e8e997c079f78e&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">steel wool<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" patina.<\/p>\n<p>I next turned my attention to the primer magazine (the long tube I pointed out earlier).\u00a0 When I withdrew the primer magazine from its slot, I could see the lower end of the tube was brass, but I still wasn&#8217;t sure about the entire tube.\u00a0 I went to work on the tube with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/3M-pad01-Heavy-Scour-Green\/dp\/B001KYQBX0\/?&amp;_encoding=UTF8&amp;tag=exhaustnotes-20&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;linkId=9bcfac081dfa9b876a3833f8ef1c2d6b&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Scotchbrite<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=exhaustnotes-20&amp;l=ur2&amp;o=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/> and that did the trick.
