{"id":11262,"date":"2020-12-05T06:18:19","date_gmt":"2020-12-05T14:18:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/?p=11262"},"modified":"2020-12-05T06:36:51","modified_gmt":"2020-12-05T14:36:51","slug":"the-b36-bomber-fort-worth-amon-carter-and-more","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/index.php\/2020\/12\/05\/the-b36-bomber-fort-worth-amon-carter-and-more\/","title":{"rendered":"The B-36 Bomber, Fort Worth, Amon Carter, and more"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This could be a long blog read or a short one.\u00a0 It&#8217;s your call.\u00a0 I have two YouTube videos today that are pretty amazing, in my opinion.\u00a0 One is short and one is long.<\/p>\n<p>By way of background, my first job as an engineer was on the F-16 program at General Dynamics in Fort Worth, Texas.\u00a0 \u00a0The reason I guess that&#8217;s significant is a few years ago I came across this video, <em>Six Turning Four Burning<\/em>, and as I watched it, I recognized the General Dynamics plant where I worked in the background.\u00a0 The video is an excerpt from <em>Strategic Air Command<\/em>, a 1950s movie starring Jimmy Stewart.\u00a0 It features the Convair B-36 bomber, an airplane with six radial piston engines and four jet engines (hence the six turning, four burning title).\u00a0 I think you&#8217;ll enjoy it.<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9FJVxtTNjJk\" width=\"644\" height=\"362\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, I was channel surfing on Netflix and I found a documentary about the B-36.\u00a0 That had my attention, because when I worked at General Dynamics 40 years ago, there were still guys there who had worked on the B-36 engineering development program.\u00a0 They spoke about the B-36 in reverential tones, and to them, it was perhaps mankind&#8217;s greatest accomplishment.<\/p>\n<p>Everything about the B-36 was Texas sized.\u00a0 It had a wingspan larger than a 747.\u00a0 The tail was so tall they had to raise the aircraft nose 18 feet to get the tail to clear the Convair plant exit as these giants came off the assembly line.\u00a0 \u00a0I don&#8217;t know what impressed me more&#8230;the aircraft itself, or the way those oldtimers talked about it.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11269\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11269\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-11269\" src=\"http:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/the-last-b-36.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"283\" srcset=\"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/the-last-b-36.jpg 500w, https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/the-last-b-36-300x170.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 85vw, 500px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11269\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The last B-36 built at the Convair plant in Fort Worth, Texas.
