{"id":11664,"date":"2021-01-17T06:00:08","date_gmt":"2021-01-17T14:00:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/?p=11664"},"modified":"2021-01-17T06:01:43","modified_gmt":"2021-01-17T14:01:43","slug":"dancing-with-the-devil","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/index.php\/2021\/01\/17\/dancing-with-the-devil\/","title":{"rendered":"Dancing with the Devil"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Another blog title dilemma.\u00a0 I went with the one you see above.\u00a0 I almost went with &#8220;Quoted by the <em>NY Post<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This is a blog about a dynamite So Cal loop ride, one that I covered for <em>Motorcycle Classics<\/em> magazine a couple of years ago and one that was (as the saying goes) critically-acclaimed in the <em>NY Post<\/em>.\u00a0 No kidding.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll get to that in a second or two.\u00a0 First, the ride:\u00a0 It&#8217;s circumnavigation of the San Gabriel Mountains, with a stop at the Devil&#8217;s Punchbowl State Park.\u00a0 \u00a0The Punchbowl was burned out during one of the recent California wildfires, but it will be back.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s the route:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11672\" src=\"http:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/DPB.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"307\" srcset=\"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/DPB.jpg 600w, https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/DPB-300x154.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This ride includes a stretch along the northern side of the San Gabriels, a hop over the San Andreas Fault, Mt. Emma Road to cut around the northwest corner, the magnificent Angeles Crest Highway, and more.\u00a0 I like to start south of the San Gabriels and head up through Cajon Pass on I-15, grab the 138, and then take a quick left on Lone Pine Road.\u00a0 That&#8217;s a nice long climb up into the San Gabriels, it&#8217;s desolate, and it&#8217;s scenic.<\/p>\n<p>I wrote up this ride for <em>Motorcycle Classics<\/em>, and suprisingly, the <em>NY Post<\/em> newspaper had nice things to say about it.\u00a0 They prepped an article critiquing other motorcycle mag articles, but they liked my piece.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s what they had to say:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Funny how it\u2019s Motorcycle Classics, a magazine focused more on the bike than the ride, that really revved our two-wheeled wanderlust.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Joe Berk takes us on a ride through a passage in California\u2019s San Gabriel Mountains called \u201cThe Devil\u2019s Punchbowl.\u201d The piece opens with a picture of a San Andreas Fault sign. Berk only gets one page to draw us in, but he has us ready to put our keys in the ignition.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>\u201cThe Nirvana-like northern segment through the San Gabriels\u2019 scenic twisties is \u2026 where the fun begins,\u201d Berk advises.
