A couple of months ago I shared a photo of a very cool SIG 239 that good buddy TJ had finished in Urban Camo (it’s the one you see in the photo above).\u00a0 I was intrigued by the finish, and as TJ walked me through the steps, I started to get an appreciation for how much work is involved.\u00a0 Here’s the process as TJ explained it to me:<\/p>\n

Step 1:<\/strong>\u00a0 Disassemble, clean and inspect the firearm.
\nStep 2:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sand blast or other surface preparation.
\nStep 3:<\/strong>\u00a0 Apply base coat (black Duracoat for the gun you see above).
\nStep 4:\u00a0<\/strong> Add camo stickers to create pattern.
\nStep 5:<\/strong>\u00a0 Spray light grey Duracoat.
\nStep 6:<\/strong>\u00a0 Add more camo stickers to create pattern.
\nStep 7:<\/strong>\u00a0 Spray dark grey Duracoat to create pattern.
\nStep 8:<\/strong>\u00a0 Add more camo stickers to create pattern.
\nStep 9:<\/strong>\u00a0 Spray base coat again (black Duracoat for the gun you see above).
\nStep 10:<\/strong>\u00a0 Remove all camouflage stickers and inspect gun.
\nStep 11:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u00a0Overspray muting stripes (netted flat black).
\nStep 12:<\/strong>\u00a0 Spray clear coat.
\nStep 13:<\/strong>\u00a0 Clean excess Duracoat from holes, rails, etc.
\nStep 14:<\/strong>\u00a0 Reassemble and oil firearm.<\/p>\n

Here’s what it looks like as the gun proceeds through the urban camo application process:<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The above makes for a good-looking gun and a durable finish.\u00a0 After it’s fully cured, it’s relatively impervious to solvents or gun oils.<\/p>\n

TJ can do other finishes as well, including a soft camouflage done without the tape described above (freehand spots or stripes).<\/p>\n

TJ can also do speckling (like you see below), which is a good finish for hiding pitting and other surface imperfections.<\/p>\n

I’ve had six handguns and a rifle customized by TJ, and every one of them is a stellar example of his craftsmanship.\u00a0 These include my Model 59<\/a>, a bright stainless Colt 1911<\/a>, my MacManus Colt 1911<\/a>, the Rock Island Compact<\/a>, a Model 60 Smith and Wesson snubbie<\/a>, a Ruger Mini 14<\/a>, and my new Colt Python<\/a>.\u00a0 TJ’s emphasis is on reliability and perfection and he’s met both of those objectives in every case.\u00a0 It’s been money well spent.\u00a0 When it comes to custom firearms, TJ is in a class by himself.<\/p>\n
