{"id":14818,"date":"2021-10-13T04:35:04","date_gmt":"2021-10-13T11:35:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/?p=14818"},"modified":"2021-10-13T04:35:04","modified_gmt":"2021-10-13T11:35:04","slug":"nine-reasons-why-you-should-ride-a-chinese-motorcycle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/index.php\/2021\/10\/13\/nine-reasons-why-you-should-ride-a-chinese-motorcycle\/","title":{"rendered":"Nine Reasons Why You Should Ride A Chinese Motorcycle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sometimes we&#8217;ll do a blog just to get folks fired up, you know, like the mainstream media does.\u00a0 And if there&#8217;s one thing we&#8217;ve learned, it&#8217;s that there&#8217;s no better format for lighting a fire than a listicle.\u00a0 Listicles get lots of hits, they\u2019re fun to write, and they offend the easily offended. \u00a0If the topic is controversial, all three reasons are amplified.\u00a0 With that as an introduction and in these times of human rights violations, a new cold war, and a town called Wuhan, what could be more controversial than a list of reasons why you should ride a Chinese motorcycle?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reason 1:\u00a0 Cost<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hey, what can I say?\u00a0 Buy a Beemer or a Ducati or a KTM, and you\u2019ll pay twice what those bikes should cost.\u00a0 Buy a Harley\u2026.well, I don\u2019t need to finish the sentence.\u00a0 Triumphs and the Big 4 Japanese bikes cost about what I think they ought to, but a Chinese bike will be way lower than any of these.\u00a0 And when you buy a Chinese motorcycle, you probably won&#8217;t do so through a conventional motorcycle dealer, so you won&#8217;t get bent over a barrel on freight and setup fees.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14852\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14852\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-14852 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/IMG_1285-650.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"804\" srcset=\"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/IMG_1285-650.jpg 650w, https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/IMG_1285-650-243x300.jpg 243w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14852\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nearly $1600 on freight and setup on a $6600 motorcycle!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Chinese motorcycles simply cost less.\u00a0 And if you want to come back at me by claiming Chinese bikes have no resale value\u2026well, read on, Grasshopper.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reason 2:\u00a0 Resale Value<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This one may surprise you.\u00a0 The argument you hear from online motorcycle wizards (when they\u2019re not being online military strategists, political scientists, or infectious disease experts) is that Chinese motorcycles have no resale value. I\u2019m sure glad the guys who bought the two Chinese motorcycles I bought new and rode for several years didn\u2019t know that.\u00a0 When I advertised my RX3 and TT 250, one sold the same day for 60% of what it cost new; the other sold the next day for 70% of what it cost new. And that was after I&#8217;d owned those bikes for 5 years.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/IMG_8092-800-600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">My TT 250 on Route 66.\u00a0 Freight and setup on the motorcycle in the photo above would have nearly paid for this bike!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I suppose I could have taken that money and bought a used Sportster, but I went another route:\u00a0 I bought an Indian motorcycle.\u00a0 Not Indian as in Scout or Chief, but Indian as in chicken masala or curry.\u00a0 I wasn&#8217;t getting into enough catfights riding a Chinese motorcycle, I guess.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reason 3:\u00a0 Reliability<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is another advantage that will put those who know so much that just isn\u2019t so in low earth orbit.\u00a0\u00a0 I never had a breakdown on any of my Chinese bikes, and that includes big trips in the US, a ride around China (yep, China), a circumnavigation of the Andes Mountains in Colombia, and lots of Baja.\u00a0 I led tours in the Southwest and up and down Baja for CSC Motorcycles, with 8 to 15 bikes on each of those thousand-mile-plus trips, with only one bike ever needing to be trailered home.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9HJ5M2owAzQ\" width=\"642\" height=\"361\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>You can tell me about your buddy who knows a guy whose cousin bought a Chinese bike and had problems with it, but I know you know not of what you speak.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been there.\u00a0 I know different.\u00a0 I know a little bit about reliability engineering, too.\u00a0 \u00a0The Chinese bikes I&#8217;ve been around are supremely reliable.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reason 4:\u00a0 Performance<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Will a Chinese bike smoke a Hayabusa?\u00a0 You know the answer to that.\u00a0 Or at least, you know the answer today.\u00a0\u00a0 Look at what\u2019s coming down the road from China and your answer may not ring true for much longer.\u00a0 China has at least a couple of liter bikes on the horizon.\u00a0 They won&#8217;t be slow.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14844\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14844\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-14844 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/RA9-1000-600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"490\" srcset=\"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/RA9-1000-600.jpg 600w, https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/RA9-1000-600-300x245.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14844\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">What&#8217;s coming down the pike from Chongqing&#8230;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Within their displacement classes, the Chinese bikes perform as good as, or maybe even better than the small displacement bikes from Germany or Japan.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14841\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14841\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-14841 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/BMW300GS.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/BMW300GS.jpg 600w, https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/BMW300GS-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14841\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Deutschland? Nein! Das ist ein Mumbai maschinen!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/DSC1265-600C.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"698\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Japanese? Nope. This puppy will help you Thai one on.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Hell, those other bikes aren&#8217;t even made where you think they&#8217;re made.\u00a0 Ask me how I know.\u00a0 Want some Pad Thai with your KLR or Triumph Bonneville?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reason 5:\u00a0 Self-Reliance<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut there\u2019s no dealers!\u201d or so goes the anti-China whine.\u00a0 (Actually, China has some good wines, but I digress.)\u00a0 \u00a0With regard to the lugubrious (look it up)\u00a0 &#8220;there&#8217;s no dealer&#8221; wails, I have two responses.<\/p>\n<p>I used to be able to say that I\u2019ve seen the same number of BMW, Harley, KTM, and other big name dealers in Baja as I saw for Chinese manufacturers (that number was zero).\u00a0 But I can\u2019t say that anymore.\u00a0 Italika (a Mexican company, the Romanesque name notwithstanding) now imports Zongshens to Mexico, so you\u2019ll actually have better dealer coverage in Mexico with a Chinese bike than you would with a BMW, a Harley, a Triumph, a Ducati, or any other other macho man motorcycle.\u00a0 It&#8217;s even more pronounced if your travels take you to South America; Chinese bikes are all over down there.<\/p>\n<p>So that\u2019s one response; the other is:\u00a0 You say \u201cthere are no dealers\u201d like it\u2019s a bad thing.\u00a0 Maybe my life experiences are unique, but I don\u2019t think so.\u00a0 Whenever I&#8217;ve had work done by dealers, most of the time it was so poorly executed I had to do it over myself. I\u2019d rather save the time and cut the cost associated with letting some kid learn motorcycle maintenance on my bike (while the dealer charges me $125 per hour as Junior learns). Nope, not having dealers is a good thing.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/20190319_0664-600.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">It&#8217;s from India and it runs as well as a Chinese motorcycle, which is to say, it&#8217;s good.\u00a0 I do all the routine maintenance on the Enfield myself.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I know this approach is not for everybody.\u00a0 Some guys like working on their bikes, some guys like Starbucks, some guys like clutches that rattle, and some guys like tattoos and chrome.\u00a0 Whatever floats your boat.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reason 6:\u00a0 Fuel Economy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Both my Chinese 250s sipped fuel like <em>The New York Times<\/em> ingesting truth serum.\u00a0 My carbureted TT 250 got about 60 miles per gallon; my fuel injected RX3 always did better than 70 miles per gallon.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/01120042-600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"398\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fuel economy as good as a car!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>My last Harley was a 40-miles-per-gallon bike when new, and when I put an S&amp;S stroker motor in it, it joined the\u00a0 33-miles-per-gallon club and I received a personal thank you note from the Emir.\u00a0 Yamaha&#8217;s old V-Max got 27 mpg.\u00a0 Yeah, I know, there\u2019s a huge difference in displacement between a Harley and a China bike.\u00a0 But if you don\u2019t like spending $5 bucks a gallon for Biden gas, a Chinese motorcycle can lessen the pain.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reason 7:\u00a0 Style<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You know, all those years I rode an RX3, the keyboard commandos criticized the bike for copying BMW\u2019s styling.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14840\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14840\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-14840 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/160710_1817-900-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/160710_1817-900-1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/160710_1817-900-1-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14840\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gobi Gresh, on a Chinese motorcycle, riding in the Gobi desert. 6000 miles in the ancient kingdom with nine other riders on China bikes, and nobody missed a beat.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Hell, I can\u2019t see much of a difference in any of the ADV bikes&#8217; styling for the last 15 or 20 years.\u00a0 They all look like the illegitmate offspring of a wasp mating with an armored personnel carrier.\u00a0 It\u2019s the ADV style.\u00a0 I think it looks good.\u00a0 And unlike the Teutonic Tower bikes (you know, the Special K and GoSlow machines), I could get my leg over the RX3\u2019s saddle.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reason 8:\u00a0 \u00a0Individuality<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At one of the Love Rides (do they still even do those anymore?) Jay Leno was the grand marshall, and when he got up on stage, he asked if anybody had seen his buddy.\u00a0 \u201cYou know, the gray-haired guy with the black Harley T-shirt and pot belly\u2026\u201d\u00a0 It got a good laugh, but a lot of rugged individualist podiatrists, dentists, lawyers, and other pseudo-bad-asses were looking around nervously.\u00a0\u00a0 You know what I mean. The folks at the River Runs could be made by a cookie cutter.\u00a0 Their moms all dress them the same.\u00a0 BMW riders?\u00a0 Stop in at any Starbuck&#8217;s and check out the Power Rangers inside. It&#8217;s the same deal.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14851\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14851\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14851\" src=\"http:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/DSC0215-600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/DSC0215-600.jpg 600w, https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/DSC0215-600-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14851\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">One of the Hollister events, where all the individualists converge.\u00a0 They&#8217;re all trying to be Marlon Brando.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Ride a Chinese motorcycle, though, and you&#8217;ll stand apart.\u00a0 Trust me on this\u2026you won\u2019t bump into too many people riding a Zongshen or a Loncin at the Rock Store.\u00a0 Other riders may make snarky comments about your bike in ignorance, without knowing where many of the parts on their bikes are made (that&#8217;s because their manufacturers try to keep it a secret, as explained below).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reason 9:\u00a0 You May Already Be On A Chinese Motorcycle&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8230;but you just don\u2019t know it.\u00a0 Some bikes that you think are made in Japan are actually completely manufactured in China. \u00a0Others have significant Chinese content.\u00a0 I\u2019m not just talking bits and pieces&#8230;I&#8217;m referring to castings, electronics, and in some cases, the complete engine (it\u2019s no accident you sometimes hear Chinese factory technicians humming the Horst Wessel song).\u00a0 You <em>ubermensch<\/em> riders on a first-name basis with your barristas know who you are, but did you know you&#8217;re already riding a China bike?\u00a0 I know&#8230;we live in a free country.\u00a0 If you feel comfortable spending $5 for a cup of coffee when you should be buying <span class=\"VIiyi\" lang=\"zh-CN\"><span class=\"JLqJ4b ChMk0b\" data-language-for-alternatives=\"zh-CN\" data-language-to-translate-into=\"en\" data-phrase-index=\"0\">\u6280\u672f\u652f\u6301\u9686\u946b<\/span><\/span> decals (it means <em>Powered by Loncin<\/em>) for your $1800 panniers, more power to you.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>So there you have it.\u00a0 I could make excuses and blame this entire blog on Gresh (the topic was his idea), but that&#8217;s not me.\u00a0 And for all you guys who look at the Chinese motorcycles I&#8217;ve owned and tell me \u201cYou Coulda Bought A Used Sportster\u201d (sung to the tune of <em>I&#8217;m A Yankee Doodle Dandy<\/em>), well, all I can say is &#8220;heh heh heh.&#8221;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Got a response?\u00a0 Hey, leave it here&#8230;don&#8217;t be a wuss and leave it on Facebook.\u00a0 We want to hear from you!<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Never miss an ExNotes blog!\u00a0 Sign up here for free:<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sometimes we&#8217;ll do a blog just to get folks fired up, you know, like the mainstream media does.\u00a0 And if there&#8217;s one thing we&#8217;ve learned, it&#8217;s that there&#8217;s no better format for lighting a fire than a listicle.\u00a0 Listicles get lots of hits, they\u2019re fun to write, and they offend the easily offended. \u00a0If the &hellip;
