{"id":1537,"date":"2018-11-11T05:47:30","date_gmt":"2018-11-11T13:47:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/?p=1537"},"modified":"2018-11-11T05:47:30","modified_gmt":"2018-11-11T13:47:30","slug":"less-power-and-heavier-than-a-harley","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/index.php\/2018\/11\/11\/less-power-and-heavier-than-a-harley\/","title":{"rendered":"Less power and heavier than a Harley&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I promised you a few blogs ago that I found something with less power and more weight than a Harley.\u00a0 As a guy who&#8217;s owned a couple of the potato-potato bikes and more than a few dealer-emblazoned t-shirts (and being a firm admirer of The Motor Company), I give myself license to poke fun on occasion.<\/p>\n<p>What might this discovery be, you wonder?<\/p>\n<p>How&#8217;s this sound?\u00a0 It has exactly 1 horsepower, and it weighs 1200 lbs.<\/p>\n<p>Take a look&#8230;<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/scontent-lax3-1.xx.fbcdn.net\/v\/t1.0-9\/45416245_10155952377086801_3194816748889047040_n.jpg?_nc_cat=100&amp;_nc_ht=scontent-lax3-1.xx&amp;oh=18640214c4c8650b20de462c2788d275&amp;oe=5C6FAA36\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">A descendant of the original W.K. Kellogg Arabians&#8230;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Yep, it&#8217;s an Arabian stallion.\u00a0 At least I think it&#8217;s a stallion.\u00a0 I&#8217;m sure of this, though:\u00a0 It&#8217;s an Arabian, and they sure are magnificent.<\/p>\n<p>It seems old Will Kellogg (yep, that Kellogg&#8230;think Corn Flakes and Special K) owned all the land currently occupied by Cal Poly Pomona.\u00a0 He bequeathed the land to California with two caveats (that&#8217;s Latin, of which I am discovering myself to be one):\u00a0 California had to create an Ag College on the Kellogg estate, and the Ag College had to care for Kellog&#8217;s Arabians in perpetuity.<\/p>\n<p>What a deal!\u00a0 The People&#8217;s Republik couldn&#8217;t say yes fast enough.\u00a0 That was, I think, back in the &#8217;20s or so, and the Arabians have been running free on the Cal Poly campus ever since.\u00a0 Along the way, they&#8217;ve starred in a bunch of western movies and a few Disney features (the Magic Kingdom is just a few miles down the 57 from the Cal Poly campus, and Hollywood is just a few miles west on the 10).\u00a0 The best part, though, is that the Arabians are accessible to us, the public. \u00a0 And they are beautiful.\u00a0 Magnificent.\u00a0 Stunning.\u00a0 You really need to see these wonderful creatures.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/scontent-lax3-2.xx.fbcdn.net\/v\/t1.0-9\/45412379_10155952377126801_3362455438485356544_n.jpg?_nc_cat=111&amp;_nc_ht=scontent-lax3-2.xx&amp;oh=95da21efc0aa9448832dc23870910fe0&amp;oe=5C83871C\" width=\"600\" height=\"390\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">One of the 15 or so colts born every year to the Cal Poly Arabians.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Cal Poly has a show every month, and Susie and I went this past weekend.\u00a0 It was awesome.\u00a0 Cal Poly students take care of the herd, and it is a sight to see.\u00a0 The show is open to the public, it&#8217;s only an hour long, and it&#8217;s grand and inexpensive entertainment.\u00a0 I get to go free because I&#8217;m an Emeritus (I didn&#8217;t even know I was a Roman, let alone one with a Latin title). \u00a0 I told one of the students I was an Emeritus (I guess I was trying to impress her), and she asked if that meant I was an old professor. \u00a0 It&#8217;s something like that, I told her. \u00a0\u00a0 Anyway, that title got me in the door for free.\u00a0 For the rest of you Plebeians, it&#8217;s only $3.\u00a0 Trust me on this:\u00a0 It&#8217;s well worth it.<\/p>\n<p>Good times, folks.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/scontent-lax3-1.xx.fbcdn.net\/v\/t1.0-9\/45509220_10155952377166801_5214980983366877184_n.jpg?_nc_cat=105&amp;_nc_ht=scontent-lax3-1.xx&amp;oh=9f50804f927f7c2779655dee70e4e9a0&amp;oe=5C73D72E\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">A saddle that would look right at home on any cruiser.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I promised you a few blogs ago that I found something with less power and more weight than a Harley.\u00a0 As a guy who&#8217;s owned a couple of the potato-potato bikes and more than a few dealer-emblazoned t-shirts (and being a firm admirer of The Motor Company), I give myself license to poke fun on &hellip;
