Displacement: Less is More<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>114 cubic inches?\u00a0 2300 cubic centimeters?\u00a0 That\u2019s automobile territory and then some. Down and Dirty<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You know, I don&#8217;t need a GS to go offroad.\u00a0 \u00a0Neither do you.\u00a0 They&#8217;re too big, too heavy, and too tall.\u00a0 They look good at a Starbuck&#8217;s, but I&#8217;m not going to spend $5 for a cup of coffee.\u00a0 I remember back in the day (for me, that would be the 1960s) when we took Hondas and Triumphs and BSAs off road all the time and thought nothing of it.\u00a0 We didn&#8217;t call it &#8220;adventure&#8221; riding, either&#8230;we just called it riding. We didn&#8217;t need a marketing guy and a decal to make our bikes off road capable.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve even gone off road with a Harley Softail, although maybe that was taking things a bit far.\u00a0 I guess what I&#8217;m saying is I&#8217;d like a bike to be light enough and the seat height to be reasonable, and I&#8217;m good to go for any off road requirements that bubble up in my travels.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/californiascooterco.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/HD-Motoxer.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"431\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">The FLH-AS in the salt fields of Guerrero Negro, B.C.S. &#8220;AS&#8221; stands for Adventure Scrambler.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>10. Just Say No To Stratospheric Seat Heights<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The seat height should not be higher than about 30 inches.\u00a0 An inch or two lower would be even better.\u00a0 I understand that mucho suspension travel is muey macho for some, but a lot of motorcycles have gone crazy.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know anyone with a 37-inch inseam.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t know if there are enough basketball players to justify a motorcycle that most of us would need a step ladder to mount.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 398px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/californiascooterco.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/LBMC06-0.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"398\" height=\"600\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">It&#8217;s on the AutoCad screens somewhere in Bavaria, you know.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>11. Fat City<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Weight should be under 400 pounds.\u00a0 It\u2019s doable, guys.\u00a0 Some of today\u2019s bikes are approaching a thousand pounds.\u00a0 That\u2019s nuts.\u00a0 Under 400 pounds works for me; less would be ever better. If my motorcycle drops, I want to be able to pick it up by myself.\u00a0 The 1966 Triumph Bonneville my Dad rode weighed 363 pounds. What&#8217;s In A Name?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d be okay with some kind of alphanumeric quasi-military\u00a0 designation or a cool sounding noun, like Bonneville or Electra-Glide or MT06.\u00a0 The weird noun \u201cINT\u201d adorns my Enfield only because the Mumbai boys didn\u2019t want to take on Honda (they should; Royal Enfield had an Interceptor way before Honda did).\u00a0 I\u2019m okay with a Chinese motorcycle, but it would have to have a good name (<em>Cool Boy<\/em> won&#8217;t cut it here).\u00a0 \u00a0The first RX3s in America had a tank panel emblazoned with <em>Speed<\/em> (hey, I can\u2019t make this stuff up); I caught some online flak about that.\u00a0 I countered it by telling the keyboard commandos we wanted <em>Methamphetamine<\/em>, but the font became too small when we tried to fit it on the tank.\u00a0 BSA used to have great names, like <em>Spitfire<\/em> and <em>Thunderbolt<\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0 Those could work.\u00a0 Here are a few others I thought you might like to see.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15583\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15583\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-15583 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/20180415_2527-600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/20180415_2527-600.jpg 600w, https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/20180415_2527-600-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15583\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nah. Pipe Up!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A motorcycle has to be visually and aurally balanced.\u00a0 To me, that includes chrome exhaust pipes on both sides of the motorcycle (like you see on that gorgeous Norton in the big photo above, and in the Beezer below).\u00a0 Low pipes or high, either are okay by me.\u00a0 Back in the 1960s Yamaha had the <em>Big Bear<\/em> (now there&#8217;s a great name) with upswept chrome exhausts on either side of the bike and I thought that was perfect.\u00a0 Any of the &#8217;60s British street twins were perfect, especially Triumphs and BSAs.\u00a0 Flat black stamped steel with flanged welds on only one side of the bike (like my KLR 650) are an abomination.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15580\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15580\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-15580 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/DSC01755-600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/DSC01755-600.jpg 600w, https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/DSC01755-600-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15580\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">British chrome symmetry.
