{"id":15670,"date":"2021-12-30T07:55:07","date_gmt":"2021-12-30T15:55:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/?p=15670"},"modified":"2021-12-30T15:34:16","modified_gmt":"2021-12-30T23:34:16","slug":"highway-395-closed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/index.php\/2021\/12\/30\/highway-395-closed\/","title":{"rendered":"Highway 395 Closed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Highway 395 closed yesterday just north of Bridgeport due to snow.\u00a0 I know that road well.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve ridden it a bunch of times and it&#8217;s a favorite, but wow, the weather can turn on a dime up there.\u00a0 Once you leave Bishop heading north, the elevation goes up abruptly, and in the next 30 miles or so it can go from cold to damn cold mighty quickly.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15674\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15674\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-15674 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/150607_7302-900-600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"401\" srcset=\"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/150607_7302-900-600.jpg 600w, https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/150607_7302-900-600-300x201.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15674\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Highway 395 in warmer times. As I recall, temperatures were in the triple digits when I shot this photo around Manzanar.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I once rode my KLR 650 up to Lake Tahoe on a press junket and the weather was okay.\u00a0 Moderate, not too cold, nice riding weather on the roads in and around Tahoe.\u00a0 The ride home was something else, though.\u00a0 Tahoe is pretty high in elevation and I dropped maybe two or three thousand feet coming down the mountain to Highway 395.\u00a0 That&#8217;s when the cold really set in.\u00a0 I had good gear on, but no electric vest, and the cold was brutal.\u00a0 I stopped at the Bridgeport Inn maybe a hundred miles down the road and went in for breakfast.\u00a0 Well, that&#8217;s not entirely true.\u00a0 I went in to warm up, and I wanted to just sit there for a couple of hours sipping coffee after breakfast.\u00a0 It worked, but it took a while.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15672\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15672\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-15672 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/DSC0002-600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"896\" srcset=\"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/DSC0002-600.jpg 600w, https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/DSC0002-600-201x300.jpg 201w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15672\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The KLR 650 on Highway 395, with the Sierra Nevada Mountains in the background. It was cold going north; it was way colder coming home.\u00a0 This is an interesting photo &#8211; you can see the moon peeking out just above the mountains.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>You know, the funny thing is that another hundred miles or so south when I rolled through Adelanto on the 395, it was so hot I took most of that gear off.\u00a0 The temperature had gone from near freezing on the 395 north of Bridgeport to nearly 100 degrees down in the desert.<\/p>\n<p>The KLR 650 was a good road bike and a great traveling companion.\u00a0 I rode it all over Baja and through a lot of the American Southwest.\u00a0 It&#8217;s gone down the road now (I sold it to a friend of a friend who may still have it).\u00a0 Good fuel economy, it could touch 100 mph on a good day, and the thing was just comfortable.\u00a0 The ergonomics were perfect for me.
