That\u2019s US Highway 395 in the photo below, which runs from the border with Mexico all the way up to Canada. It\u2019s soft sand getting there.\u00a0 It was no problem on my KLR 650.<\/p>\n<p>When World War II broke out, Franklin Roosevelt had Americans of Japanese descent from the three western states on the Pacific interred in what were basically concentration camps. It was a national disgrace, it\u2019s hard to believe such things occurred in this country, and if I had to choose a single word to describe my visit, it would be \u201cdisturbing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16535\" src=\"http:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/150607_7355-650.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" srcset=\"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/150607_7355-650.jpg 650w, https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/150607_7355-650-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The camp was just to the right of the guard tower you see above. Even though it was 104 degrees down on the Mojave floor when I shot this photo, you can still see snow in the eastern Sierras.<\/p>\n<p>There were 10,000 Japanese-American prisoners kept at Manzanar. When I worked for Aerojet (in another life a few decades ago), Bob worked with me in the cluster bomb business. Check out this unusual house, guarded by a rusty T-rex.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16541\" one.\u00a0 You&#8217;ll want to check the weather before you leave.\u00a0 Highway 395 has temperatures well over 100 degrees during the summer, and it can be a very, very cold ride during the
