{"id":21633,"date":"2023-03-19T07:44:16","date_gmt":"2023-03-19T14:44:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/?p=21633"},"modified":"2023-03-19T07:57:04","modified_gmt":"2023-03-19T14:57:04","slug":"a-cup-of-joe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/index.php\/2023\/03\/19\/a-cup-of-joe\/","title":{"rendered":"A Cup of Joe?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h6>By Joe Berk<\/h6>\n<p>So where did the phrase \u201ca cup of Joe\u201d originate?\u00a0 For the book, that\u2019s easy.\u00a0 Good buddy Marcus won the naming contest a few weeks ago with his suggested <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B0BXNJT93R\"><em>A Cup O\u2019 Joes<\/em><\/a>, which was the first suggestion to arrive in our Comments section and my immediate favorite.\u00a0 Yeah, that\u2019s the commercial, and yeah, if you haven&#8217;t bought a copy already, please do so.\u00a0 But from where did the term &#8220;a cup of Joe&#8221; actually emanate?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B0BXNJT93R\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-21634 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Cup-O-Joes-6x9-Front-400-x-72-Stroke.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Cup-O-Joes-6x9-Front-400-x-72-Stroke.jpg 400w, https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Cup-O-Joes-6x9-Front-400-x-72-Stroke-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 85vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s no conclusive answer, but like many things, there are lots of opinions (making it a near perfect topic for Internet musing, I suppose).\u00a0 Here are a few I found.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Navy Angle<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One hypothesis holds that &#8220;a cup of Joe&#8221; is based on a US Navy booze ban.\u00a0 Secretary of the Navy Josephus \u201cJoe\u201d Daniels prohibited alcohol on ships in 1914.\u00a0 After that edict, the strongest thing a sailor could drink on board a US Navy vessel was coffee.\u00a0 Angry sailors coined \u201ca cup of Joe\u201d to describe their coffee as a result.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-21635\" src=\"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/sailors.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"615\" srcset=\"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/sailors.jpg 600w, https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/sailors-293x300.jpg 293w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Big Jamoke?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Language historians think &#8220;a cup of Joe&#8221; didn\u2019t enter the English language until around 1930.\u00a0 Linguists think the term came from an adaptation of the invented word \u201cjamoke,\u201d which was a combination of java and mocha.\u00a0 \u201cJamoke\u201d may have become \u201cJoe.\u201d\u00a0 Eh, that seems a bit farfetched to me, but the term &#8220;jamoke&#8221; sounds kind of cool to me.\u00a0 I like it.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-21636\" src=\"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Jamoke.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"408\" srcset=\"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Jamoke.jpg 600w, https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Jamoke-300x204.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>An Average Joe<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A third hypothesis is that the word \u201cJoe\u201d means something common.\u00a0 You know, like \u201cthe average Joe\u201d (understandably, not one of my favorite expressions).\u00a0 Because coffee is such a common man\u2019s drink (a common woman\u2019s drink, too, based on the long line of women I always see at any Starbuck\u2019s ordering obscene $8 coffee-based concoctions), the expression \u201ca cup of Joe\u201d emerged.\u00a0 I don\u2019t put much stock in this one, either.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-21637\" src=\"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/AvJoes.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/AvJoes.jpg 600w, https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/AvJoes-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>So what\u2019s the answer?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Beats me.\u00a0 Maybe good buddy and coffee empresario Ren of Batdorf &amp; Bronson Coffee can weigh in with his opinion.\u00a0 Or maybe one of our other readers knows.\u00a0\u00a0 Let\u2019s hear what you think.<\/p>\n<p>My take on all the above?\u00a0 \u201cA cup of Joe\u201d just seems to fit.\u00a0 I am not the sharpest matzo in the box when I wake up in the morning, and I need my coffee to sharpen my thinking.\u00a0 \u201cA cup of Joe\u201d is an expression that fits perfectly for me.\u00a0 I\u2019m enjoying mine now.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, one more thing&#8230;don&#8217;t forget to buy your own copy of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B0BXNJT93R\"><em>A Cup O&#8217;
