Just in the last few months they\u2019ve bought a Husaberg 400, a gas-in-frame Buell, a KTM 890, and a Kawasaki Vulcan 750. The boys want to do some high speed touring, like going to the Sacramento mile in California, and they are talking 500-mile days in the saddle. As I look over my operational motorcycles I don\u2019t see anything I\u2019d like to sit on for 500 miles.\u00a0\u00a0But if I include the non-ops there is one that is capable of reeling off 500 miles without breaking a sweat.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m talking about the long dormant Kawasaki ZRX1100. The bike is a road burner of the highest order and looks cool as hell to boot. The only problem is the ZRX has sat for 9 years as CT and I wandered the world. Nothing on the thing works.\u00a0 The last time I rode the bike was on the Christmas toy run in the Florida Keys in 2014. The front brakes on the Rex are 6-piston jobs and there are two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Caliper-Rebuild-18-3113-Kawasaki-Streak\/dp\/B07BN3ZBJ3\/ref=mp_s_a_1_30?crid=1LHAS0F5ZXN5F&amp;keywords=1999+kawasaki+ZRX+front+brake+caliper&amp;qid=1682821278&amp;sprefix=1999+kawasaki+zrx+frbrake+caliper%252Caps%252C2935&amp;sr=8-30&amp;_encoding=UTF8&amp;tag=exhaustnotes-20&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;linkId=7e8a9c3caa9af251752ed0ad5ecf4242&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">calipers<\/a> which means I have to deal with 12 pistons. I\u2019m going to try and get away with cleaning up the master cylinders as I have not been impressed with the quality of aftermarket junk and I don\u2019t feel like looking up a bunch of part numbers on the Kawasaki sites. I mostly stop with the front brake anyway; hopefully that master will be in good shape. Don\u2019t try to follow the logic. In addition, the fork seals need replacing and new fork oil dumped in. It&#8217;s good stuff.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Due to its long slumber there are many, many issues with the ZRX, like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Cooling system leaks, probably from the water pump<\/li>\n<li>Broken throttle cable at twist grip housing<\/li>\n<li>Chain is worn out<\/li>\n<li>Carbs are gummed up<\/li>\n<li>Gas tank is full of smelly, gooey gasoline<\/li>\n<li>Clutch lever is frozen<\/li>\n<li>Clutch slave cylinder is leaking<\/li>\n<li>Battery is not there<\/li>\n<li>Valves need adjusting<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And I\u2019m sure other things will crop up as I get into the project.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_22148\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22148\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-22148 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/5-600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/5-600.jpg 600w, https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/5-600-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22148\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Barely broken in, my ZRX is.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I\u2019ve really let this bike down. Believe me, I feel bad about it. Nine years of neglect have taken a huge toll on anything rubber. The good thing is the Rex has relatively low miles (25,000) and has never gone under water so I\u2019ve got good bones to work with. The paintwork is mostly perfect and there are no dents. The bike will clean up and be a stunner. I rode the ZRX from Florida to New Mexico years ago and it will be bookoo-maximus karma if New Mexico is the place where the ZRX1100 rises up to snarl across the rust-red landscape again.
