{"id":23827,"date":"2023-10-21T00:01:22","date_gmt":"2023-10-21T07:01:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/?p=23827"},"modified":"2023-10-21T11:50:14","modified_gmt":"2023-10-21T18:50:14","slug":"bangkok-part-4-the-floating-market-good-eats-and-good-friends","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/index.php\/2023\/10\/21\/bangkok-part-4-the-floating-market-good-eats-and-good-friends\/","title":{"rendered":"Bangkok Part 4:  The floating market, good eats, and good friends"},"content":{"rendered":"<h6>By Joe Berk<\/h6>\n<p>It was to be a busy day in Thailand starting with a long ride south out of Bangkok to the famous floating market, an awesome shrimp lunch after that visit, then back to Bangkok, and then dinner at a fabulous Italian restaurant with a couple of good friends (I know people everywhere).\u00a0 Imagine that: Italian food in Bangkok (and it was good, too).<\/p>\n<p>About the floating market near Bangkok: I&#8217;d first sort of heard of it way back in the early 1970s when I saw a James Bond movie and its chase scenes with those narrow Thai boats.\u00a0 The Bond flick was <em>The Man With The Golden Gun <\/em>(if you&#8217;re reading this blog, my guess is you&#8217;ve seen all the Bond movies).\u00a0 The movie showed the boats in Bangkok, not the floating market, but it planted a seed 50 years ago and I when I heard about the floating market on this visit, I wanted to see it.\u00a0 Here\u2019s that scene I remembered showing James Bond doing his secret agent stuff (with an appearance by Sheriff J.W. Pepper, ably played by the late Clifton James) on Bangkok&#8217;s waterways:<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"The Man With The Golden Gun (1974) - Bangkok boat scene\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nZIyMD46M-U\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The floating market is about 100 miles south of Bangkok.\u00a0 The concept is that there are shops on the canals in the delta where the Chao Phraya River meets the sea. The idea is you are on these long narrow boats and you float along, visiting shops.\u00a0 In some places the vendors paddle out to visit you.\u00a0\u00a0 Every turn in the floating market was a photo op, and for me, the photo ops were the best part of our visit.\u00a0 \u00a0I took close to 400 photos in the space of a couple of hours.\u00a0 All were with my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Nikon-D3300-AF-P-18-55mm-Digital\/dp\/B01JN28QQA\/ref=sr_1_5?crid=FNH2LPHRCJO&amp;keywords=Nikon%252BD3300&amp;qid=1695906395&amp;sprefix=nikon%252Bd%252Caps%252C140&amp;sr=8-5&amp;th=1&amp;_encoding=UTF8&amp;tag=exhaustnotes-20&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;linkId=fb6da9e7114ec320c5b52ae4b5beffa9&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">D3300<\/a> Nikon and its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Nikon-18-55mm-3-5-5-6G-Vibration-Reduction\/dp\/B00HQ4W4PC\/ref=sr_1_3?crid=16RLOERF6I4UB&amp;keywords=Nikon+18-55+lens&amp;qid=1695906462&amp;sprefix=nikon+18-55+lens%252Caps%252C149&amp;sr=8-3&amp;ufe=app_do%253Aamzn1.fos.f5122f16-c3e8-4386-bf32-63e904010ad0&amp;_encoding=UTF8&amp;tag=exhaustnotes-20&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;linkId=7fb080e7caf594d8799a40f69758ec8f&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">18-55mm<\/a> kit lens.\u00a0 That combo is a stellar travel photography approach.\u00a0 The 18-55mm lens is not as sharp as a good prime lens, but it does a good job and it is versatile.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_23867\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23867\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-23867 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/171008_5163-600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/171008_5163-600.jpg 600w, https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/171008_5163-600-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-23867\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A typical scene in the floating market. If you&#8217;re wondering what this guy is&#8230;it&#8217;s a pygmy slow loris, rare primates that live in bamboo forests in Southeast Asia.\u00a0 They look friendly.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On the way back to Bangkok, our driver took us to a nondescript restaurant that didn&#8217;t look like much from the outside, but our driver knew where the good spots were.\u00a0\u00a0We had shrimp fried rice for lunch, and it was delicious.\u00a0 The freshness, the aroma, the taste\u2026it was marvelous.\u00a0\u00a0 It was easily the best shrimp plate I\u2019d ever had, and I&#8217;ve had some good ones.\u00a0 I\u2019m not supposed to eat rice and I\u2019m not supposed to eat shrimp, but I\u2019m glad I broke the rules for this meal.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_23874\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23874\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-23874 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/171008_5474-600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/171008_5474-600.jpg 600w, https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/171008_5474-600-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-23874\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A hidden gem&#8230;a Thai shrimp plate. I knew when I was enjoying it I&#8217;d probably never find this restaurant again.
