{"id":25024,"date":"2024-01-19T00:01:29","date_gmt":"2024-01-19T08:01:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/?p=25024"},"modified":"2024-01-14T17:05:19","modified_gmt":"2024-01-15T01:05:19","slug":"medicine-bow-wyoming","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/index.php\/2024\/01\/19\/medicine-bow-wyoming\/","title":{"rendered":"Medicine Bow, Wyoming"},"content":{"rendered":"<h6>By Joe Berk<\/h6>\n<p>We were a swarm of 250cc bees bound for Medicine Bow, Wyoming.\u00a0 \u00a0I didn&#8217;t know why that excited me and I didn&#8217;t know what to expect, but the place sounded romantic.\u00a0 Not romantic in the sense of female companionship; it was instead the romance of the Old West.\u00a0 Medicine Bow, Wyoming, and we were headed there on our single-cylinder Zongshen motorcycles.\u00a0 \u00a0We had been on the road for a week, showing the American West to our Chinese and Colombian visitors.\u00a0 It all started on the other side of the world in Chongqing when Zongshen asked if I could take them on a ride though America.<\/p>\n<p>Wow, could I ever.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_25047\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25047\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-25047 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/DSC0009A-900-600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"401\" srcset=\"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/DSC0009A-900-600.jpg 600w, https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/DSC0009A-900-600-300x201.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-25047\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Susie took this photo as I was showing the Zongshen execs where we might ride in America. The guy on my immediate right is good buddy Fan, who follows the ExNotes blog.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Medicine Bow.\u00a0 \u00a0It had a nice ring to it.\u00a0 I was thinking maybe they had a McDonald&#8217;s and we could have lunch there.\u00a0 \u00a0I think the reason Medicine Bow sounded so intriguing is I had heard it maybe dozens of times in western movies and television shows.\u00a0 Medicine Bow was one of the major destinations for cattle drives in the 1800s, where cows boarded trains for their one-way trip east, where they would stop being cows and become steaks.\u00a0 An average of 2,000 cows shipped out of Medicine Bow every day back then.\u00a0 \u00a0That would keep McDonald&#8217;s going for a day or two (except there were no McDonald&#8217;s in the 1800s).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_25099\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25099\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-25099 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/VirginianBook.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"310\" height=\"466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/VirginianBook.jpg 310w, https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/VirginianBook-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 310px) 85vw, 310px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-25099\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The very first western novel.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I was surprised when we buzzed in.\u00a0\u00a0Medicine Bow is about five buildings, total, none of them was a McDonald&#8217;s, but one was the Virginian Hotel.\u00a0 It&#8217;s the hotel you see in the photo at the top of this blog and as you might imagine there&#8217;s a story to it.\u00a0 You see, back in the day, the first western novel ever was written by a dude named Owen Wister, and the title of his book was <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Virginian-Owen-Wister\/dp\/1438284888?&amp;_encoding=UTF8&amp;tag=exhaustnotes-20&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;linkId=227e4bdc27caa40d9ee5fedf27f25151&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Virginian<\/a><\/em>.\u00a0 It was later made into a movie.\u00a0 The story is about a young female schoolteacher who settled in Medicine Bow and two cowboys who vied for her attention.\u00a0 When the historic hotel was later built in Medicine Bow, what other name could be more appropriate than The Virginian?\u00a0 And about the name of the town, Medicine Bow?\u00a0 Legend has it that Native Americans found the best mahogany for making bows (as in bows and arrows) in a bend (a bow) along the Medicine River, which runs through the area.\u00a0 \u00a0 I can&#8217;t make up stuff this good.<\/p>\n<p>I was the designated leader of the Zongshen swarm on this ride. A few months later I rode with Juan in Colombia, another grand adventure.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After lunch, we wandered around the hotel for a bit. it was a twist of the key and a touch on the starter button; the result was the same as we continued our trek west with Frankie Lane&#8217;s <em>Rawhide<\/em> on repeat in my mind:\u00a0 <em>Keep rollin&#8217;, rollin&#8217;
