{"id":31046,"date":"2025-09-27T00:01:03","date_gmt":"2025-09-27T07:01:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/?p=31046"},"modified":"2025-09-27T19:07:32","modified_gmt":"2025-09-28T02:07:32","slug":"a-sign-from-god","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/index.php\/2025\/09\/27\/a-sign-from-god\/","title":{"rendered":"A Sign From God?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h6>By Joe Berk<\/h6>\n<p>At this point in my life, I realize it&#8217;s an itch I&#8217;ll probably never get to scratch:\u00a0 The need to own a Moto Guzzi.\u00a0 It started back in the early 1970s, when I was exploring rural northern New Jersey on my &#8217;71 CB 750 Honda (yes, there were and still are rural parts of New Jersey).\u00a0 I had stopped for gas at a sort of combination general store and gas station when a pair of full dress Moto Guzzis rumbled by.\u00a0 I heard them first, before I saw them, and from the sound I thought it would be a couple of Harleys.\u00a0 Moto Guzzis sound a lot like Harley-Davidsons.\u00a0 Moto Guzzis were new in America, and these were the first I had ever seen.\u00a0 They burbled on by, leaving a lasting image and their captivating ExhaustNotes in my mind.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_31060\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31060\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-31060 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Long-Way.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" srcset=\"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Long-Way.jpg 600w, https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Long-Way-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-31060\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ewan and Charlie, at it again. The Long Way Home is a good show. It somehow felt much more real watching these guys on older bikes battling the weather and old bike breakdowns. I enjoyed this one much more than the other McGregor and Boorman series.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>So, about this sign from God business:\u00a0 A few days ago while channel surfing on Apple TV+, I saw another &#8220;Long Way&#8221; series from Ewan McGregor and Charlie Boorman.\u00a0 I had seen the other series from Ewan and Charlie and thought they were silly, almost an affront to real adventurers, guys like <a href=\"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/index.php\/2024\/11\/23\/dave-barr-12-apr-1952-7-nov-2024\/\">Dave Barr<\/a> who had ridden around the world.\u00a0 You know, two dilletantes with more money than talent cashing in on the adventure motorcycle craze, versus Dave Barr, the real deal, a guy who rode around the world on his own dime on a trashed-out old Super Glide, one of the most unreliable motorcycles ever.\u00a0 Not finding anything more interesting as I brainlessly surfed through Apple&#8217;s offerings, <em>The Long Way Home<\/em> got a click from me.\u00a0 This time, the boys were on old bikes, an old BMW boxer and an old Moto Guzzi.\u00a0 It was the Guzzi that got my attention.\u00a0 I&#8217;m watching (and enjoying) the series.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll have a review of it posted here on ExNotes in the near future.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_31055\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31055\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-31055 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/20250905_7766-600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"414\" srcset=\"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/20250905_7766-600.jpg 600w, https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/20250905_7766-600-300x207.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-31055\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">There can be no doubt about this shop&#8217;s focus on Moto Guzzis.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Then another thing happened.\u00a0 I visited Moto Guzzi Classics in Signal Hill and found myself in a sea of old Guzzis, like the stunning El Dorado you see at the top of this blog.\u00a0 Several of the old Guzzis were former police bikes, and I&#8217;ve always had a fascination for police motorcycles (I wrote a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/1727673344?ref_=pe_3052080_397514860\">book about police bikes<\/a> a few years ago).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_31054\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31054\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-31054 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/20250905_7765-600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"828\" srcset=\"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/20250905_7765-600.jpg 600w, https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/20250905_7765-600-217x300.jpg 217w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-31054\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Indeed they are.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Mark, the proprietor, specializes in bringing old Guzzis back to life.\u00a0 Mark doesn&#8217;t usually do 100-point restorations; Moto Guzzi Classics&#8217; forte is in resurrections.\u00a0 You know, finding old bikes and getting them running again, kind of like Joe Gresh has done on his Zed and is currently doing on his Honda Dreams.<\/p>\n<p>Mark let me snap a few photos of the 850 El Dorado and a former CHP police bike in his shop when I visited recently.\u00a0 It sure was fun.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_31048\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31048\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-31048 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/20250905_7705-600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/20250905_7705-600.jpg 600w, https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/20250905_7705-600-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-31048\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Patina to an exponent. It was powered by the rear tire. When the officer actuated the cable, the siren&#8217;s drive rotated into the rear tire.
