(The Fives)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h6>By Joe Berk<\/h6>\n<p>In prior <em>\u00bfQuantos Pistones?<\/em> posts, I wrote about engines with which I had personal experience.\u00a0 When dealing with five-cylinder engines, though, I cannot do that.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t think I&#8217;ve ever even seen a five-cylinder motorcycle.\u00a0 They exist, though, and I found them by poking around a bit on the Internet.\u00a0 The best source was Wikipedia, which lists several.\u00a0 I used Wikipedia as the basis for further research, and I went beyond that to include others found online.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Straight Fives<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>These fall into two categories:\u00a0 Custom-built motorcycles created from stock bikes, and Honda&#8217;s 1960s small displacement Grand Prix racing motorcycles.<\/p>\n<p>Honda built the RC148 (the first edition of their <span class=\"T286Pc\" data-sfc-cp=\"\">125cc inline five-cylinder, four-stroke engine), and the RC 149 (which was a further development effort).\u00a0 The RC149 is reported to have reached speeds of over 130 mph.\u00a0 It had an 8-speed transmission and the pistons must have been about the size of thimbles.\u00a0 Well, not really.\u00a0 This engine was originally based on Honda&#8217;s 50cc twin (can you imagine such a thing).\u00a0 Take two and a half 50cc twins, throw in some Honda pixie dust, and <em>voil\u00e0<\/em>, you get an inline 125cc 5-cylinder GP bike.\u00a0 It must have been exciting, being an engineer at Honda back in the 1960s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a video I found of Honda techs evaluating an RC149 on a Honda test track.\u00a0 If you like listening to engines wail (their, um, ExhaustNotes), you&#8217;ll enjoy this one:<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Honda RC149 (1966) - also been custom straight fives fabricated from other engines.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s one based on the Kawasaki three-cylinder 750cc two stroke:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe title=\"Have You Ever Seen a 5 Cylinder Two Stroke!\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7vSfwOH9pWY\" width=\"344\" height=\"612\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Those bikes must have been impressive, too.\u00a0 I thought I once saw something on the Internet about a similar custom Kawasaki 900 (you know, like Gresh&#8217;s old Zed) that had been cobbled into an inline 5-cylinder machine, but I couldn&#8217;t find it again.\u00a0 Maybe it was in a dream.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Honda&#8217;s V-5 GP Bikes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Honda was the only player in the V-5 game, and they only did so on their GP bikes in the early 2000s.\u00a0 That bike was designated the RC211V.\u00a0 Everyone else used either a V-4 or an inline four.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-31242\" src=\"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Honda-RC211V.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"561\" srcset=\"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Honda-RC211V.jpg 600w, 45vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The reasons are very technical, but they all boil down to two advantages:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>The V-5 engine was actually smaller than either a V-4 or an inline four engine, and<\/li>\n<li>The V-5 engine had an inherent power advantage over the other four-cylinder engines.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The above is explained allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Verdel Radial 5<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s one that has a bit of controversy about it:\u00a0 The Verdel radial 5-cylinder bike:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-31245\" src=\"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Verdel.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" srcset=\"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Verdel.jpg 600w, https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Verdel-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Some have written about it as a rare, 1912 motorcycle, but it&#8217;s not.\u00a0 It was built in Britain by an engineer in the late 1990s.\u00a0 A notable motorcycle museum bought it thinking it was a genuine vintage motorcycle (Verdel did exist, but the company made aircraft engines, not motorcycles), and apparently the museum has since acknowledged that this never was a production motorcycle from Verdel.\u00a0 It kind of looks the part, so it&#8217;s easy to understand how the museum fell for the vintage bike story.\u00a0 The ground clearance and those two cylinders hanging out from the bike&#8217;s undercarriage just scream for a skid plate.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Go Puch Yourself<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sorry, I couldn&#8217;t resist that (every once in a while, my New Jersey roots emerge).\u00a0 Back to the story:\u00a0 Here&#8217;s another interesting 5-cylinder custom motorcycle assembled by a talented builder using Puch moped engines.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-31246\" src=\"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/PuchOff.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"364\" srcset=\"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/PuchOff.jpg 600w, https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/PuchOff-300x182.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Uwe Oltman (that&#8217;s the builder&#8217;s name), a guy in Germany, assembled the custom you see above from five Puch 50cc (actually, 48.8cc) moped engines.<\/p>\n<p>The info I found says the bike is pretty much an unrideable showpiece due to the noise and heat from the five Puch 2-stroke engines.\u00a0 They&#8217;ve been poked out to 70cc each, so I guess that makes this creation a 350.\u00a0 As design exercises go, I think it&#8217;s cool.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Megola<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I first heard of this from a friend who had a conversation about rare motorcycles with Jay Leno.\u00a0 Mr. Leno has a Megola in his collection.\u00a0 The Megolas were German bikes from\u00a01921 to 1925 in Munich. The name is combination of its designers&#8217; names (Meixner, Gockerell, and Landgraf).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-31247\" src=\"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Megola.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"454\" srcset=\"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Megola.jpg 600w, https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Megola-300x227.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Megolas are about as weird as motorcycles can be.\u00a0 The engine&#8217;s five cylinders rotate around the front axle, with a 6-to-1 transmission that cuts the axle rotation to one sixth of the engine&#8217;s speed.\u00a0 The 640cc engine ran at 3600 rpm, which turned the front wheel at 600 rpm, which provided a top speed of about 60 mph.\u00a0 There&#8217;s no clutch, so when a Megola rider came to a stop, so did the engine.\u00a0 The owner&#8217;s manual suggested riding in small circles if you didn&#8217;t want to shut the engine off.\u00a0 Weird, huh?<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>So there you have it:\u00a0 The Fives.\u00a0 Next up in our <em>\u00bfQuantos Pistones?<\/em> series will be (you guessed it) the Sixes.\u00a0 That one will be easier, as I owned a Honda CBX a few years ago.\u00a0 Stay tuned!<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Ah, missed a couple!\u00a0 I thought I had them all, but then I found this video, and it identified a couple more 5-cylinder bikes.\u00a0 \u00a0Take a look; it&#8217;s worth a watch!<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"The Only 7 Five-Cylinder Bikes Ever\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9StJd73hSX4\" width=\"679\" height=\"391\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Missed our earlier\u00a0<em>\u00bfQuantos Pistones?<\/em> stories on the Singles, the Twins, the Triples, and the Fours?\u00a0 Hey, no problemo!\u00a0 Here they are:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/index.php\/2025\/10\/15\/quantos-pistones-the-fours\/\">\u00bfQuantos Pistones?
