{"id":31765,"date":"2025-12-31T00:01:47","date_gmt":"2025-12-31T08:01:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/?p=31765"},"modified":"2025-12-24T10:12:16","modified_gmt":"2025-12-24T18:12:16","slug":"minnesotas-split-rock-lighthouse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/index.php\/2025\/12\/31\/minnesotas-split-rock-lighthouse\/","title":{"rendered":"Minnesota&#8217;s Split Rock Lighthouse"},"content":{"rendered":"<h6>By Joe Berk<\/h6>\n<p>When driving around Lake Superior (and all the Great Lakes), the waters appear to be calm.\u00a0 At least they do to me, and it feels kind of odd, because\u00a0 each of the Great Lakes are so big you can&#8217;t see the other side.\u00a0 In other words, from the shore they appear to be as big as the ocean, except there are no waves.\u00a0 \u00a0But that&#8217;s not always the case.\u00a0 \u00a0In stormy weather, the Great Lakes can get rough.\u00a0 In 1905, just one storm damaged 29 vessels.\u00a0 \u00a0You might wonder:\u00a0 Is there that much shipping on the Great Lakes?\u00a0 The short answer is yes, and in particular, a lot of iron ore mined in Minnesota went by ship to Wisconsin and other locations.\u00a0 U.S. Steel alone had 112 ore-carrying ships in 1901.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_31772\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31772\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-31772 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Map-600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"384\" srcset=\"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Map-600.jpg 600w, https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Map-600-300x192.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-31772\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Split Rock&#8217;s location along Lake Superior. I was armed only with my D3300 Nikon and a 35mm 1.8 prime lens. It&#8217;s a system you zoom with your feet (i.e., moving closer to or away from the subject). When they were operational, they sounded a 2-second blast every 18 seconds. They went out of service in the 1960s. It was awesome.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The ride out to the lighthouse from Duluth (where we stayed for a couple of days) was beautiful.\u00a0 We followed Minnesota 61 north for 47 miles.\u00a0 It was a beautiful ride along the Lake Superior shoreline.\u00a0 On the trip north, we notice Betty&#8217;s Pies (a restaurant), and we stopped there for dinner on the way back.\u00a0 There was an hour wait to get in, but it was worth it.<\/p>\n<p>After our dinner, there was a young couple parked next to us on a pair of sports bikes.\u00a0 The gal was on a nondescript Japanese bike; the guy was on a Triumph Speed Triple (and that definitely caught my attention).\u00a0 \u00a0 We followed them back along Minnesota Highway 61, and after a few miles they veered left on Scenic Drive (which follows the Lake Superior shoreline much more closely).\u00a0 \u00a0That is an appropriate name.\u00a0 Scenic Drive took us directly into Duluth and our hotel.
