{"id":32193,"date":"2026-03-22T00:01:59","date_gmt":"2026-03-22T07:01:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/?p=32193"},"modified":"2026-03-27T21:40:18","modified_gmt":"2026-03-28T04:40:18","slug":"barbequed-salmon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/index.php\/2026\/03\/22\/barbequed-salmon\/","title":{"rendered":"Barbequed Salmon"},"content":{"rendered":"<h6>By Joe Berk<\/h6>\n<p>Few dinners are as easy to make and ritzy as barbequed salmon.\u00a0 It&#8217;s one of my favorites, and it came about as a result of dinner several decades ago at the now-defunct California Lawry&#8217;s restaurant out near Griffith Park.\u00a0 Lawry&#8217;s is a company that makes spices, one of which is their 17 Seasonings.\u00a0 I&#8217;m not sure why I ordered salmon that night (it might have been a first for me), but it was delicious. So much so, in fact, that I asked our waiter how it was prepared.\u00a0 He smiled.\u00a0 That was the whole point of Lawry&#8217;s having a restaurant:\u00a0 To get you to like their meals and buy their spices.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s easy,&#8221; he said.\u00a0 &#8220;Drizzle a little olive oil on the fish, put some of our Lawry&#8217;s 17 Seasonings on top of it, throw it on the grill, and you&#8217;re there.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The guy was right, and I&#8217;ve been making my barbequed salmon that way ever since.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a favorite if it&#8217;s just Sue and I having dinner, and it&#8217;s a favorite when we&#8217;re having folks over for company.<\/p>\n<p>With that as an intro, let&#8217;s get into it.<\/p>\n<p>Ingredients<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Salmon.\u00a0 Duh.\u00a0 Yep.\u00a0 You can get a big container at Costco (although lately their salmon hasn&#8217;t been that good), or you can buy a couple of cutlets packaged like you see below.\u00a0 When you open the salmon, if it smells fishy or it has an ammonia aroma, bring it back to the store.\u00a0 It&#8217;s been on the shelf too long.\u00a0 Good fish will have no smell.<\/li>\n<li>Seasonings.\u00a0 I think you can still get Lawry&#8217;s 17 Seasonings.\u00a0 These days, we just buy Costco&#8217;s bigger bottle of seasoning, which they call their organic no salt seasoning.\u00a0 A bottle of that lasts us a year or two.\u00a0 It&#8217;s just as good as the Lawry&#8217;s, but way less expensive.<\/li>\n<li>Olive Oil.\u00a0 Get the extra virgin stuff.\u00a0 If you see anything labeled extra extra virgin, steer around it.\u00a0 It only goes up to extra virgin.\u00a0 I know people in the olive oil business.\u00a0 Trust me on this.<\/li>\n<li>Charcoal Briquets.\u00a0 I like to barbeque the old-fashioned way, with a barbeque and charcoal.<\/li>\n<li>A Charcoal Grill.\u00a0 Nothing fancy here.\u00a0 I use the cheapest charcoal grill I can find at Walmart.\u00a0 Every decade or so I&#8217;ll need to replace it.\u00a0 I like the taste of charcoal grilled stuff better than a gas grill.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Once you have everything, you&#8217;d good to go.\u00a0 This takes about 45 minutes to prepare, with a good half hour being necessary just to get the charcoal going.<\/p>\n<p>Get the charcoal grill started and put the wire grill on top of the glowing briquets.\u00a0 Scrub the grill clean after it&#8217;s hot and spray the grill with a nonstick spray.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_32195\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32195\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-32195 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/IMG_2561-600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/IMG_2561-600.jpg 600w, https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/IMG_2561-600-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-32195\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Steelhead, Atlantic salmon, Coho salmon&#8230;it&#8217;s all good. We prefer steelhead trout.
