{"id":4269,"date":"2019-05-15T06:00:37","date_gmt":"2019-05-15T13:00:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/?p=4269"},"modified":"2019-05-15T06:24:12","modified_gmt":"2019-05-15T13:24:12","slug":"making-scents-of-things","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/index.php\/2019\/05\/15\/making-scents-of-things\/","title":{"rendered":"Making Scents of things.."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I started writing this bit thinking that I had a good idea for a series of men&#8217;s colognes.\u00a0 Then I realized:\u00a0 In my entire 68+ years on this planet, I&#8217;ve never used cologne, and I can&#8217;t remember hanging around any guys who ever did.\u00a0 So I started thinking&#8230;my thoughts for this blog hovered around aromas I enjoy, so maybe these should be women&#8217;s colognes. \u00a0 Whatever.\u00a0 There&#8217;s a request at the end:\u00a0 We&#8217;d like to know your thoughts, too.\u00a0 Got any suggestions?<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-4300\" src=\"http:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/In-N-Out.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"209\" \/>In-N-Out<\/em><\/span>. \u00a0I can&#8217;t drive by an In-N-Out Burger during business hours without inhaling that delightfully inviting aroma of grilled onions, beef, French fries, and the other good things the In-N-Out folks have assembled into what is unquestionably the best meal in town.\u00a0 And every time I do, I have to fight the temptation to pull in and get an Animal Style burger.\u00a0 A perfume capturing this fragrance might be the best advertising for In-N-Out ever. \u00a0 It would drive me nuts.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s my vote for the name:\u00a0 <em>Oil of In-N-Out<\/em>.\u00a0 Or maybe <em>Eau de In-N-Out<\/em>. Whaddaya think?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-4299\" src=\"http:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/wd40.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"83\" height=\"300\" \/>WD-40<\/span>.\u00a0 Ah, another great fragrance. \u00a0 It actually stands for Water Displacement No. 40, and that&#8217;s because it&#8217;s the 40th formulation the WD-40 company tried before they arrived at the perfect compound for displacing water, acting as a lubricant (no emails, please; I know it&#8217;s not a replacement for gun oil), a cleaner, and Lord only knows what else.\u00a0 WD-40 is the kiss of death around any kind of epoxy bonding, soldering, or welding operation (in fact, many of my failure analysis activities centered on getting WD-40 out of high-tech cleanroom environments), but it&#8217;s perfect for just about anything else.\u00a0 And, as is the point of this blog, it smells good. It would make a great perfume, I think.\u00a0 WD-40 is a silicone-based lubricant, so somehow silicone has to figure into the name.\u00a0 Help me out here, folks!<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-4298\" src=\"http:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/27KITCHENSAUSAGES-articleLarge.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"209\" \/>Sausage and Peppers<\/span><\/em>. \u00a0 This has got to be another classic aroma.\u00a0 Who has ever smelled sausage and peppers (maybe with a little onion thrown in) on the grill without getting hungry?\u00a0 I love that smell and I find it inviting. \u00a0 As a cologne? \u00a0 Yeah, it would work.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t know that I could get Sue to use it, but ladies, take my word on this&#8230;.that aroma works.\u00a0 The only problem might be finding the right name.\u00a0 Maybe we could go Italian and call it <em>Salcicci y Peperoni<\/em>, you know, to give it a Continental flair.\u00a0 Yeah, that could work.\u00a0 <i><span style=\"font-family: Georgia;\">Salcicci y Peperoni<\/span><\/i>, sold in fine stores everywhere.<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-4297\" src=\"http:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Hoppes.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"121\" height=\"300\" \/>Hoppes No. 9<\/span><\/em>.\u00a0 I love that smell.\u00a0 I would probably have become a gun nut even if I wasn&#8217;t fascinated by guns just to have a reason to use Hoppes No. 9.\u00a0 It hints of good times past and present, and it&#8217;s an aroma that reaches back decades. \u00a0 If there are any perfume or cologne companies out there reading this, pay attention to this one, folks. \u00a0 You don&#8217;t need to spend big bucks on market studies or focus groups&#8230;I&#8217;m telling you, this is the one.\u00a0 All I ask is that if you bring a Hoppes cologne to market, tell me about it a few weeks before you do.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll buy as many shares of your stock as I can. \u00a0 <em>Eau de Hoppes<\/em>. \u00a0 That&#8217;s great. \u00a0 Oh, yeah, I&#8217;ve used the <em>Eau de<\/em> thing already for In-N-Out.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s one that&#8217;s even better:\u00a0 <em>Love Potion No. 9<\/em>.\u00a0 I can hear the advertising jingle already.<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-4296\" src=\"http:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/freshcutgrass.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/freshcutgrass.jpg 250w, https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/freshcutgrass-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 250px) 85vw, 250px\" \/>Fresh Cut Grass and Gasoline<\/span><\/em>. \u00a0 This is a weird one, but it works.\u00a0 I&#8217;m remembering east coast summer evenings when I had to mow the grass back on the ranch.\u00a0 The smell of gasoline and fresh cut grass somehow just works.\u00a0 Maybe it&#8217;s because of the memories I have of those pleasant New Jersey summer evenings, fireflies, and mowing the lawn. \u00a0 The trick was to wait until well after dinner when things cooled off, and to start early enough to get the whole thing done before it got too dark. \u00a0 To twist a phrase from Robert Duvall, I love the smell of gasoline and fresh cut grass in the evening. \u00a0 I&#8217;m having a bit of a problem coming up with a catchy name, though.\u00a0 Any suggestions?<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-4295\" src=\"http:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/2stroke.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"243\" height=\"183\" \/>Two Stroke Exhaust<\/span><\/em>. \u00a0 I already have the perfect name for this one:\u00a0 <em>Blue Smoke<\/em>.\u00a0 I think it&#8217;s perfect.\u00a0 Admittedly, it would have to be an acquired taste; folks either love that smell or they hate it.\u00a0 I&#8217;m in the former camp.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve only ever had one ring-dinger my entire life, but I remember going to the half-mile dirt track races when the 250s were running, and in those days, the 250s were all ring-dingers.\u00a0 You could smell the exhaust as soon as you entered the parking lot outside the stadium back then, and it was exciting. \u00a0 It promised good things to come. Yeah, this could work.<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-4294\" src=\"http:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/bacon.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"163\" \/>Bacon<\/span><\/em>.\u00a0 Hey, who doesn&#8217;t like bacon? \u00a0 The challenge here is a name that doesn&#8217;t make the person wearing it sound like a porker.\u00a0 Hmmm.\u00a0 The Italian word for bacon is, well, bacon.\u00a0 And the Italian word for lard is lardo.\u00a0 Nope, neither one of those will work.\u00a0 Ah, but the Spanish.\u00a0 Bacon becomes <em>tocino<\/em>. \u00a0 I can hear it now.\u00a0 Adorn yourself with the gentle yet intoxicating and inviting fragrance of <i>Tocino<\/i>.\u00a0 Indeed, that works well.<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-4293\" src=\"http:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/chili.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/chili.jpg 225w, https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/chili-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 85vw, 225px\" \/>Chili<\/span><\/em>.\u00a0 This one is a maybe. \u00a0 Personally, I love the aroma of a well-seasoned chili, especially if it&#8217;s done in a slow cooker and the flavor fills the house.\u00a0 It could be beef, venison, a decent cut of wild boar, elk, whatever.\u00a0 The meat is almost secondary to making a great chili.\u00a0 Red chili flakes, tomatoes, onions, Anaheim chili peppers, and cumin.\u00a0 Cumin&#8217;s the thing that makes a good chili great. \u00a0 Maybe that could be the name.\u00a0 <em>Cumin<\/em>. \u00a0 Yeah, I like it. \u00a0 <em>Cumin.\u00a0<\/em> Put a little spice in your life.\u00a0 What do you think?<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-4292\" src=\"http:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/150929101049-black-coffee-stock-super-tease.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"169\" \/>Coffee<\/span><\/em>.\u00a0 The best coffee in the world comes from Puerto Rico.\u00a0 If you don&#8217;t believe me on this, I don&#8217;t care.\u00a0 I know.\u00a0 Two Popes ago, Pope John (that&#8217;s right, the guy in the Vatican) used to send his jet to Puerto Rico regularly to pick up coffee.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve been in Colombia, and while their coffee is good, it&#8217;s not Puerto Rican coffee (no offense, Juan Valdez). \u00a0 But any coffee will do first thing in the morning (even Gresh&#8217;s powdered Nescafe), and I think everyone can agree (regardless of where you fall on the political or geographic spectrum) that a strong coffee fragrance early in the morning has to be one of the best aromas on the planet.\u00a0 They wouldn&#8217;t make coffee-flavored ice cream if coffee wasn&#8217;t a good idea.\u00a0 And (get this) if you came out with a coffee perfume, the distribution network is already in place.
