{"id":8030,"date":"2020-04-02T14:49:41","date_gmt":"2020-04-02T21:49:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/?p=8030"},"modified":"2020-04-02T15:29:10","modified_gmt":"2020-04-02T22:29:10","slug":"italian-meat-sauce-and-lasagne","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/index.php\/2020\/04\/02\/italian-meat-sauce-and-lasagne\/","title":{"rendered":"Italian meat sauce and lasagne&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m sheltered in place, I&#8217;ve got enough ammunition reloaded to arm an infantry platoon, I&#8217;ve been reading a lot, and I&#8217;ve been sending and receiving lots of email.\u00a0 Some of that email has been from good buddy Sergeant Zuo over in Lanzhou, and one of the things Zuo mentioned he&#8217;s been doing is developing his culinary skills.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve been doing the same, and I thought I might share one of my favorite recipes with you.<\/p>\n<p>Whoa, you might say&#8230;all this manly man stuff about motorcycles, international travel, guns, reloading, and&#8230;well, you know.\u00a0 Cooking?<\/p>\n<p>You bet.\u00a0 For me, it started back in the &#8217;70s, when I was an engineer at General Dynamics in Texas on the F-16.\u00a0 I couldn&#8217;t get a date to save my life, I was single, and I was lonely.\u00a0 And there were all those beautiful young Texas ladies.<\/p>\n<p>One of my good friends was constantly dating a variety of beautiful women.\u00a0 So one day I asked him:\u00a0 What&#8217;s the secret?<\/p>\n<p>Good buddy John was only too happy to put me on the right path.\u00a0 &#8220;Don&#8217;t ask them out for dinner,&#8221; he said.\u00a0 &#8220;Invite them over to your place for dinner, and you cook a meal.\u00a0 No one can resist that&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Hmmm&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>Well, it worked.\u00a0 Every time. \u00a0 And today I&#8217;m married, two kids, two grandkids with a third on the way, and yep, I love to cook.<\/p>\n<p>So here&#8217;s one of my favorite recipes:\u00a0 Italian meat sauce and lasagna. \u00a0 It&#8217;s not the original dinner good buddy John cued me to (that was bacon-wrapped filet mignon, and that&#8217;s a story for another time).\u00a0 But this one is even better, I think.\u00a0 You can use the meat sauce with anything Italian (ravioli, spaghetti, stuffed shells, and more).\u00a0 Today&#8217;s focus is on lasagne and it works well.<\/p>\n<h3>Italian Meat Sauce Ingredients<\/h3>\n<p>What you&#8217;ll need is:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">1 16-once can of diced tomatoes (my preference is Contadina, but these days, I&#8217;ll take whatever is on the shelves)<br \/>\n1 8-0unce can of tomato paste<br \/>\n2 stalks of celery (sliced)<br \/>\n1\/2 onion (chopped)<br \/>\n3 cloves garlic (crushed)<br \/>\n1 lb ground beef (browned and chopped)<br \/>\n1 Italian sausage<br \/>\n1 teaspoon Italian seasoning<br \/>\n1 teaspoon oregano<br \/>\n2 bay leaves<br \/>\n1\/4 to 1\/2 teaspoon red chili pepper flakes (depending on how much zing you want in your sauce)<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7954\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7954\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7954 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/DSC_9393_1842-600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/DSC_9393_1842-600.jpg 600w, https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/DSC_9393_1842-600-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7954\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Getting started. Try it.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>So when everything is prepped, add it all to the crockpot, stir it a bit, and then start the crockpot. It&#8217;s exquisite.\u00a0 It&#8217;s far better than anything that comes out of a can or a bottle.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>PRO TIP:<\/strong>\u00a0 Slice up a half a green pepper, and add it to the crockpot before you start cooking. \u00a0 It adds another flavor dimension.<\/p>\n<h3>Lasagne<\/h3>\n<p>Like I said above, you can use the Italian meat sauce with any recipe calling for it.\u00a0 One of my favorites is lasagna.\u00a0 All you&#8217;ll need in addition to the ingredients listed above is a box of lasagna noodles.<\/p>\n<h3>Lasagne Ingredients<\/h3>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">1 box lasagna pasta<br \/>\n16 ounce container of ricotta cheese<br \/>\nShredded parmesan cheese<br \/>\n1 container of sliced mozzarella cheese<br \/>\nItalian meat sauce (as prepared above;
