{"id":991,"date":"2018-09-08T00:58:06","date_gmt":"2018-09-08T00:58:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/?p=991"},"modified":"2019-01-06T07:14:46","modified_gmt":"2019-01-06T15:14:46","slug":"lets-go-see-the-whales","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/index.php\/2018\/09\/08\/lets-go-see-the-whales\/","title":{"rendered":"Let&#8217;s go see the whales!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s as good as it gets, folks.\u00a0 Whale watching, Baja style. \u00a0 It&#8217;s the only place in the world were you can get up close and personal, and actually touch the whales. \u00a0 Combined with a motorcycle ride, it makes Baja even more special&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kV8xxTD06kM\" width=\"716\" height=\"403\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Figure on two days from the Los Angeles area to get down to Guerrero Negro.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve done it in one day, but that involves getting up at 4:00 a.m. to leave LA and riding hard for 700 miles&#8230;it&#8217;s not the best way to do it.<\/p>\n<p>The ride south is awesome, especially once you get south of Ensenada. \u00a0 You could make this an easy 5-day run if seeing the whales was your main objective, and hey, I&#8217;m here to suggest it should be. \u00a0 We&#8217;ll talk more about that in just a bit.<\/p>\n<p>The deal is this&#8230;the California gray whale herd spends its time migrating north in the summer (all the way to Alaska) and south in the winter (down to two major lagoons on Baja&#8217;s Pacific side). \u00a0 It&#8217;s the longest mammal migration in the world. \u00a0 The two lagoons where you can see the whales are Scammon&#8217;s Lagoon near Guerrero Negro, and San Ignacio Lagoon about an hour west of San Ignacio via a gnarly dirt road.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2037\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2037\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2037\" src=\"http:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Baja_140321_0861-650.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" srcset=\"https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Baja_140321_0861-650.jpg 650w, https:\/\/exhaustnotes.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Baja_140321_0861-650-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2037\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Let&#8217;s go see the whales.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>My preference (and my recommendation) is to do Scammon&#8217;s Lagoon from Guerrero Negro, as getting to the little boats only takes about 10 minutes. \u00a0 If you want to do San Ignacio Lagoon, you have to go with a service that picks you up in San Ignacio and takes you for a one-hour van ride to the lagoon. \u00a0 There are several whale watching services in Guerrero Negro; my favorite is Malarimmo&#8217;s or my good buddy Martin&#8217;s whale watching tour. \u00a0 It&#8217;s $50 per person, it includes a box lunch, and it&#8217;s literally a life-altering experience. \u00a0 Nobody does this who doesn&#8217;t come away moved by the experience.\u00a0 I know it&#8217;s hard to accept that reading a blog, but trust me, it&#8217;s what will happen.<\/p>\n<p>The whales are cool.\u00a0 They&#8217;re longer than the boats we&#8217;re in.\u00a0 And like I said earlier, you actually get to touch them.\u00a0 Ever been kissed by a 45-foot California gray whale?<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/californiascooterco.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/170321_0215-650.jpg\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Up close and personal, good buddy Rob makes two new friends&#8230;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/californiascooterco.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/170321_0221-650.jpg\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Scammon&#8217;s Lagoon, a ponga, and a motorcycle ride&#8230;.it all makes for a whale of an adventure!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The whales are only in town (i.e., in Baja) from January through April, and then they&#8217;re back on the road headed north to Alaska.\u00a0 I like to visit with them in March; it&#8217;s when I think the whales are most friendly.\u00a0 This is a really cool thing to do.<\/p>\n<p>I used to do these tours for CSC, and we&#8217;re thinking of opening it up for anybody in the ExhaustNotes crowd who wants to ride with us.\u00a0 You can be on any kind of bike, with a maximum number of people we&#8217;ll define at some point in the future. \u00a0 There won&#8217;t be any charge for this, folks, but you will have to sign up for our automatic ExhaustNotes email blog notifications to ride with us, and basically you&#8217;ll have to pass the personality test (that means you can&#8217;t be a jerk if you want to ride with us).<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re interested, let us know at <a href=\"mailto:info@ExhaustNotes.us\">info@ExhaustNotes.us<\/a> (but only let us know if you&#8217;re serious;
