The Wayback Machine: 7 Favorite Baja Destinations

Baja is a motorcycling paradise and I have a bunch of favorite destinations there.  Seven of them, to be precise, although truth be told, I like everything in Baja except for Tijuana and maybe La Paz and Loreto.  That said, my favorites are:

      • Tecate
      • San Quintin
      • Cataviña
      • Guerrero Negro
      • San Ignacio
      • Santa Rosalia
      • Concepcion Bay

So what’s so great about these places?  Read on, my friends.

Tecate

Tecate is the gateway to the middle of northern Baja, and it’s the easiest point of entry. Both Tijuana and Mexicali are too big and too complicated, and the Mexican Customs guys are too official in those bigger cities.  Tecate is a friendly place.  The last time I picked up a tourist visa in Tecate, the Customs officer tried to sell me salsa he and his family made as a side gig.  That’s what the place is like.  I love it.

If you’re into fine dining (not as in expensive dining, but just great food), it’s hard to go wrong anywhere in Baja.  Tecate has some of the best, from street taco vendors to Malinalli’s to Amore’s.  I could spend a week just in Tecate.  It’s that good.

The Tecate brewery dominate the Tecate skyline and is visible from just about anywhere in town. A can of ice cold Tecate with sea salt around the rim and a bit of lime juice…life doesn’t get any better.

San Quintin

San Quintin is 186.4 miles south of the border on Baja’s Pacific coast.  It’s usually a quiet ag town that has a lot of things going for it, including interesting hotels, good food, and Bahia San Quintin.  The Old Mill hotel and its associated restaurant, Eucalipto, is my personal favorite.  The hotel is about 4 miles west of the Transpeninsular Highway, and what used to be a harrowing soft sand ride to it is now easy peasy…the road is paved and riding there is no longer a test of your soft sand riding skills.  The Eucalipto restaurant is second to none.

What could be better than an ice cold Tecate overlooking Bahia San Quintin after a day’s riding in Baja? We once saw a California gray whale from this very spot.

You’ll notice at the top of my scribblings about San Quintin I said it is usually a quiet town.  The one exception for us was when there was a labor riot and we were caught in it.  The Mexican infantryman about 80 miles north of San Quintin told me the road was closed, but his English matched my Spanish (neither are worth a caca), and without me understanding what I was riding into, he let me proceed.  It’s not an experience I would care to repeat.  But it’s the only event of its type I ever experienced in Old Mexico, and I’d go back in a heartbeat.

The Cataviña Boulder Fields

Ah, Cataviña.  Rolling down the Transpeninsular Highway, about 15 miles before you hit the wide spot in the road that is Cataviña you enter the boulder fields.  Other-worldly is not too strong a description, and if the place wasn’t so far south of the border it would probably be used more often by Hollywood in visits to other planets.  The boulders are nearly white, they are huge, and the juxtaposition of their bulk with the bright blue sky punctuated by Cardon cactus.

I get a funny feeling every time I enter this part of Baja. Not funny as in bad, but funny as in I feel like I’m where I belong.  I once rolled through this region in the early morning hours with my daughter and she told me “you know, it’s weird, Dad.  I feel like I’m home.”  She understood (as in completely understood) the magic that is Baja.

I like the area and its stark scenery so much that one of my photos became the cover of Moto Baja!  I grabbed that shot from the saddle at about 30 mph on a CSC 150 Mustang replica, which I subsequently rode all the way down to Cabo San Lucas (that story is here).

You should buy a copy or three. They make great gifts.

Every time I roll through Cataviña with other riders, the dinner conversation invariably turns to how the boulders formed.   When I was teaching at Cal Poly Pomona, I asked one of my colleagues in the Geology Department.  He know the area as soon as I mentioned it.  The answer?  Wind erosion.

Guerrero Negro

The Black Warrior.  The town is named after a ship that went down just off its coast.    It’s a salt mining town exactly halfway down the peninsula, and it’s your ticket in for whale watching and the best fish tacos in Baja (and that’s saying something).  I’ve had a lot of great times in Guerrero Negro.  It’s about 500 miles south of the border.  You can see the giant steel eagle marking the 28th Parallel (the line separating Baja from Baja Sur) a good 20 miles out, and from there, it’s a right turn for the three mile ride west into town.  Malarrimo’s is the best known hotel and whale watching tour, but there are several are they are all equally good.  It you can’t get a room at Malarrimo’s, try the Hotel Don Gus.

What it’s all about…getting up close and personal with the California gray whales. They are in town from January through March.

It’s worth the 500-miles trek to Guerrero Negro just to savor Tony’s fish tacos. You might think I’m exaggerating. But like I said above…I’m not.
Man does not live by fish tacos alone, so for breakfast or dinner, it’s either the restaurant at Malaririmo’s or the San Remedio, a block north of the main drag into town. You won’t be disappointed at either.

After you leave Guerrero Negro and continue south, the Transpeninsular Highway turns southeast to take you diagonally across the Baja peninsula. About 70 miles down the road (which is about half the distance to the eastern shores of Baja and the Sea of Cortez along Mexico Highway 1) you’ll see the turn for San Ignacio.  It’s another one of Baja’s gems.

San Ignacio

San Ignacio is an oasis in the middle of the desert that forms much of Baja.  The Jesuits introduced date farming to the region hundreds of years ago, and it’s still here in a big way.  Leave Guerrero Negro, head southeast on Mexico Highway 1, and 70 miles later you run into a Mexican Army checkpoint, a series of switchbacks through a lava field, and when you see the date palms, turn right.

An oasis is usually formed by a volcano, and when a volcano is done discussing politics, it forms a lake. That’s the San Ignacio volcano and its lake, visible on the left as you ride into town.

Dates? Nope, not on that trip, but dates are one of the things San Ignacio is known for. I’ll bet they are delicious.

San Ignacio has a town square that’s right out of central casting, there’s a little restaurant that serves the best chile rellenos in all of Mexico (I’m not exaggerating), and the place just has a laid back, relaxing feel about it.

Santa Rosalia

You know, this town is another one of Baja’s best kept secrets.  As you travel south on Highway 1, San Ignacio is the first town you encounter after traveling diagonally across the peninsula.  Folks dismiss it because it’s an industrial town, but they do so in ignorance.  There’s a lot of cool stuff in this place.

The ride into Santa Rosalia a few years ago with novelist Simon Gandolfi, Arlene Battishill, J Brandon, John Welker, and yours truly. That’s a dead fish I’m holding.  We did a round trip to Cabo San Lucas on 150cc Mustang replicas, just to say that we could.

One of the things that’s unique about Santa Rosalia is the all-wooden architecture.  The town was originally built by a French mining company (Boleo) and they built it they way they did in France.  Like the Hotel Frances, which sits high on a mesa overlooking the town and the Sea of Cortez.  I love staying there.

There’s a cool mining musuem a block or two away from the Frances, and it’s worth a visit, too.

There are many cool things in Santa Rosalia, and one of the best is the Georg Eiffel church.  It was designed by the same guy guy who did the Eiffel town.

I’ve heard people dismiss Santa Rosalia as a gritty, industrial place not worth a stop.   Trust me on this:  They’re wrong.  It’s one of my favorite Baja spots.

Bahía Concepción

Concepción Bay is easily the most scenic spot in Baja.  It’s just south of Mulege (another delightful little town, and the subject of an upcoming ExNotes blog).  Bahía Concepción runs for maybe 20 miles along the eastern edge of the Baja peninsula.  I’ve seen whales from the highway while riding along its edge, the beaches are magnificent, and the photo ops just don’t stop.  The contrast between the mountains and Cardon cactus on one side and the pelicans diving into bright green water is view from the saddle you won’t soon forget.

My 2024 Resolutions

The New Year hits tonight.  The years keep rolling by and it’s time for my 2024 resolutions.  I’ve made a few, and with your indulgence, I’ll share them here.


I’m going to continue to hold my tongue (and my keyboard) on all things political.  I’ve never seen anyone read a social media post or a blog or listen to someone with an opposing viewpoint and suddenly exclaim, “ah, now I understand…of course you’re right, and I was wrong all along…”  Nope, the era of intelligent political discourse ended in the 1960s with the Vietnam War protests.  Back then, and now, everyone is convinced their opinion is the only true path.  I’m never going to call anyone ever again a leftwing idiot or a rightwing idiot, partly because of this resolution and partly because I hate being redundant.

I’m going to stop getting upset with people at the gym tying up machines while screwing around on their cell phones.  Nope, you can sit on a machine and text to your heart’s content.  I’ll just move on to another piece of equipment.  Someday, though, when you’re standing in front of the Pearly Gates, you’ll have to answer.  And I’ll be there.  Just in case there are any questions.

I’m going to lose weight.  The answer is to use that calorie tracker on my cell phone and exercise.  Really.  This time I mean it.  I want to be skinny like Gresh.

I’m going to cook more, but in line with the resolution above I’ll eat less.  I do a great barbequed salmon, a marvelous Italian meat sauce, delicious stuffed shells, a wonderful chili, incredible stuffed peppers, a great wild pork sausage and mushrooms casserole, tasty chicken tostadas, and a few others.  I want to try making my own chile rellenos this year and find at least three more dishes to add to my repertoire.

I’m going to sell a few guns.  I own too many to enjoy and more than a few that I don’t shoot.  It’s time to convert these investments into cash and let others have some fun.

I’m going to ride my motorcycle and my bicycle more.  I’ve slowed down on my riding quite a bit in the last three years.  Part of it is the pandemic…law enforcement on our public roads has dropped to nearly nothing, and there are too many people driving like maniacs out there…speeding, weaving in and out of traffic, and screwing around on their cell phones.  I’ve been hit by cars twice in my life while on two wheels (once on a motorcycle and once on a bicycle), and I don’t care to add a third bone-breaking event to my resume.   But I haven’t been riding enough and I want to get out and ride.  Get my knees in the breeze.   You know the feeling.

It’s time to put more pork on the table.  I’m going to do at least two hunts in 2024.  One will be a varmint hunt for coyotes in Arizona with Baja John; the other will be a pig hunt with my 6.5 Creedmoor (location to be determined).  If you’re a vegetarian or fundamentally opposed to hunting, you have my permission to skip any blogs I write about these events.

I’m not going to buy any more watches.  I came across Segal’s Law last year, which holds that a man with a watch knows what time it is, but a man with many watches is never sure.  I’m the guy who’s never sure, raised to an exponent.

I’m going to do Baja again, most likely in March so I can see the whales, eat a chile relleno in San Ignacio, and visit Javier at the La Casitas in Mulegé.  I think Gresh wants to go, too.  Maybe we’ll get our other ExNotes writers in on the action.  You’ll read all about it here on ExNotes.

I’m retiring, for real this time.   I’ll still write for the ExNotes blog and Motorcycle Classics magazine (I enjoy writing for both and I never viewed either as work), but I’m done with everything else.  It’s time.

Bobbie’s Solo Baja Ride: Part 3

Do you ever have those moments when you wake up unsure of where you are? I awoke to the sound of birds, more specifically, parrots, and the smell of fresh tortillas and knew instantly that this was not home; I was in Baja in Mulege and wholly smitten with my room with her stone walls, comfy bed, and protective mosquito netting. I didn’t want to get out of bed until I remembered that I had made plans to go horseback riding to the bay.

Throwing on my clothes and double-timing it to the restaurant, I had just enough time for a cup of coffee and water before my guide arrived to take me to the ranch, which was less of a ranch and more of a lean-to along the highway with both our horses tied and already saddled. I met my girl for the day, Lupita. She had enough spunk to whinny at our arrival and appreciate the carrots I brought to help form this new friendship. Our saddlebag were loaded with swimwear and lunch, and we set off for a leisurely ride to the bay.

Muscle memory took over from riding horses in my youth, and I gave in to the morning’s joy and the view of Conception Bay. Riding down the beach at a slow gallop letting our horses have their lead and finding a bit of shade, we stopped for an early lunch of fresh fruit, good tequila, and some freshly made empanadas. After lunch, I asked if I could take off the saddle and ride bareback, something I had not done since childhood. It seemed a perfect idea for this glorious morning. Surprisingly my guide said yes and permitted me to ride Lupita bareback into the bay to enjoy a good swim. I had forgotten the thrill of entering a body of water on horseback; Lupita seemed to enjoy the experience as she left the security of the ocean bottom and took us further out into the bay. The morning flew by and soon it was time to return to the beach and make our way back to the corral.

Returning to Historica Casita in the heat of the early afternoon, I did what any sensible local would do. I retreated to the coolness of my room for a proper afternoon siesta. After a cold shower and fresh clothes, I headed out to explore. With the help of a newfound local friend and a Google search, I learned that the Mulege indigenous population has a long and rich history that dates back centuries. It is believed that the region’s first inhabitants were hunter-gatherers who lived in small bands, but the arrival of the Mission changed their lives forever. Spanish missionaries established the mission in 1730, teaching the local population how to farm and build adobe structures and simple homes. I was also happy to learn there has been an effort to preserve their history by preserving ancient artifacts and teaching younger generations about their heritage.

While the Mission was closed, I could still walk the grounds and view the river from the vantage point of the Mission, as it is built on one of the highest points in Mulege. Wandering back down the hill, I walked the river’s edge, exploring the town and the small community of locals and ex-pats. As I made my way back to the hotel, I realized how hungry I was and looked forward to an evening in the hotel courtyard, a good dinner, and a freshly squeezed margarita. The evening did not disappoint as I sat visiting with locals and a young family visiting from the mainland. Soon I was off to bed with the promise of an early rise and the chance to explore the many beaches along Conception Bay.

The following day I was back on my bike and headed towards my next stop, Playa Santispac, a short 25 kilometers south on Highway 1. I knew I only had a few hours before the oppressive heat and humidity would force me back to the room, and I was determined to make the most of the day. Cresting the ridge, I was overlooking the bay with her teal-colored water inviting a closer look. Santispac beach has a restaurant and several palapas stationed along the beach; as I rode my bike down the beach, I decided a swim was in order, followed by a hearty breakfast at the modest beachside restaurant.

Swim and breakfast completed, I headed further south, stopping at each beach I passed and settling on what has become one of my favorite beaches, Playa el Requeson. The white sand and sand spit at low tide, taking you to a small island, was more than I could resist. Setting up my camp chair, I soon made friends with an overlander couple from England. Borrowing their snorkeling gear I enjoyed a quick swim out to the island, enjoying the starfish and rockfish along the shore. I reluctantly returned for one last night in Mulege with a new plan for the following day, to ride to Loreto for lunch and then return to Playa el Requeson to camp for two nights.

Loreto has a rich history that dates back to the 16th century when Spanish missionaries established the first mission in the area. Indigenous people then populated the area, and over time, it became an important fishing port for the region. Today Loreto is a popular tourist destination complete with a Malecon along her waterfront. Loreto has an historic town square with a well-preserved mission and museum. With a population of around 25,000, finding lodging at every price point is easy, as are the town’s many services.

After a lovely day sightseeing, I headed about an hour and a half back north to Playa el Requeson to find a bit of shade and a good place for my tent. The afternoon was blazing hot as I headed inland along Hwy 1, as I once again cursed myself for selecting June to make this ride. Complaining aside, I arrived and indulged in a long swim to take the sting out of the day’s heat. I found my new friends in the overlanding vehicle who gave me the gift of a cold drink with ice and offered the shade of their massive vehicle to pitch my tent. The day gave way to a glorious sunset, and soon, we had a modest fire complete with fresh fish for dinner. With a million stars out for our pleasure, full bellies, and the delight of margaritas on the beach, the night was spent with storytelling of our past adventures. Both Stephen and Shelly’s stories surpassed mine as they shared their adventures traveling through three continents over the past several years.

The two days camping on the beach flew by, and it was sadly time to make my way back north. I planned to head to San Felipe, but the reality of the heat made heading back to the Pacific side an easy choice. Retracing my ride through Baja allowed me to revisit a few of my favorite places and discover a few new ones to ensure this would not be my last ride there!

Bobbie’s Solo Baja Ride: Part 2

In Part 1 I shared with you my adventure from Sedona, AZ, crossing the border for the first time on a bike, and heading down Mexico’s Transpeninsular Highway to Guerrero Negro.   This blog continues the adventure.


After an early morning departure leaving behind the comforts of the Hotel Mision Cataviña, I continued on Highway 1, enjoying a quiet morning and the rare good luck of an empty road. Settling into the ride with a deep breath that allowed me to loosen my tight muscles after two long days of riding, I felt the joy start to creep in as I took in the vastness and emptiness of the Sonoran Desert. The fierceness of the summer sun had already begun turning the winter greenness to a light wheat color. This did not diminish the stark beauty of her desert, with the surrounding hills in the distance with their deep purple shadows demanding a second look. My bike was doing great; her little single-cylinder engine was a gem off-road and could manage up to 80 miles an hour, more than enough in Baja. She was a perfect bike for the moment, made for Baja.

Rolling down into Villa Jesus Maria I was more than ready for a break, something cold to drink and some much-needed gasoline. I did well with the drink and break, but as can happen in Baja, the Pemex had no gas. It was another 40 kilometers to Guerrero Negro; as I emptied my MSR liter of gas into my tank, I said a little prayer to both Jesus and Maria to extend my range to Guerrero Negro.

Prayers answered, by perhaps both Jesus and Maria, I arrived with a smidgin of gas fumes left in my tank. Reaching Hotel Don Gus, which several riders had recommended as both affordable and bike safe, I pulled into the dirt parking lot to check in. This is a typical motel-style lodging with comfortable rooms and a simple restaurant serving hearty portions. My room settled, I headed for a taco truck that every rider raves about, Tony’s Fish Tacos. Let me tell you, I often dream of Tony’s fish and shrimp tacos with the perfect batter and lime crema!

Fully satisfied and with still enough daylight left, I went to explore the salt flats famous in this area. A short ride from town, the salt flats looked like a mirage at times, fooling the eye into believing it was a vast lake. This soon gave way to the commercial operation with magnificent mounds of salt with trucks and bulldozers on the top of the salt hill so high that the trucks looked like toys. Soon I was passing the small boat dock and positioned my bike for a good pic. The sun was warm but blissfully not hot with the Pacific breeze. I set up my small camp chair, pulled out a flask filled with an excellent local Vino Tinto, and gave a silent toast to a perfect Baja day.

I woke the following day with growing excitement, and unable to wait for daybreak I loaded my bike impatiently, waiting for the restaurant to open for a much-needed cup of joe. You will often find that opening and closing times in Baja are more of a suggestion than a hard rule. A half-hour later, I was in my room, firing up my rocket pocket stove and making do with a Starbucks instant coffee and some leftover tortillas. Bike ready and stomach full, I headed to the gas station to fill up Red, only to find I had caused a stir and was noticed by a few locals who wanted to meet the female American solo rider. A few of the younger ones asked what seemed like endless questions, wanting to know where I had been and where I was going. This completed, I was on the road heading to the part of Baja I had been waiting for, Mulege and the famous Bahia Conception.

The road out of town was uneventful, an endlessly flat straight that challenged me to stay awake and focused. About an hour later, I passed the midsize town of Villa Alberto with plenty of gas, shopping, and lodging. I stopped long enough for gas and was back on the road. My interest in the highway picked up as I neared San Ignacio. A few kilometers before San Ignacio there was another military stop, which was uneventful other than the guard looking at me, my bike, and a long look down the road with was becoming the norm question and answer: Solo? Si Solo! With an astonished look, he waved me on, wishing me a safe ride. My next stop was a visit to the Baja 1000 popular pit stop, Rice and Beans, a restaurant and hotel just off the highway with good food and cold beer. I left satisfied and headed to the main square of San Ignacio.

The town of San Ignacio is a true desert oasis with more palm trees than you could count and a river running through the town. San Ignacio seems caught in a time warp as elderly men sit in the shade of the massive trees that frame the small-town square, reading and playing cards as they eye me parking my bike. Curious about this gem, I found just enough cell coverage to look up her history. San Ignacio was founded in 1706 by the Cochimi tribe. In 1728, missionary Juan Bautista de Luyando discovered San Ignacio and committed to building Misión San Ignacio Kadakaamán. The building is made of volcanic rock from the nearby mountains. Her mission sits quietly, waiting for the next visitor, and I was lucky to find her open and welcoming.

I reluctantly got back on my bike, heading back to the highway with a promise that I would return to San Ignacio for further exploration and to enjoy her peaceful river and nearby lagoon. With one more top off of gas, I headed down the road finding the excitement of endless twisties and, on the horizon to my left, the peaks of Tres Virgenes. One last climb took me to another peak, with soon a sweeping view of the Sea of Cortez. Massive winds kept me alert. The heat was near overwhelming, and the wind only accelerated my dehydration. I was physically spent with still another hour to my destination. Pulling into Santa Rosalia, I sadly passed her mission for another time. I stopped just long enough to douse myself with water at the gas station, drink as much water as possible, and get back on the road.

Soon I was riding through the arches that welcome you to the proper start of the town of Mulege. My destination was Historico Las Casitas. After several attempts to find the hotel cursing my Google Maps, I finally arrived. I walked in, took off my riding gear, and as if they were waiting for me to arrive, a young man said not a single word; instead, he handed me a glass of lemonade, a drink from heaven made with fresh limes, lemon, and cane sugar. I emptied my glass in two long swings. Gratefully finding an ounce of composure, I asked about a room for the night. I soon settled into my volcano rock room with mosquito netting; it took me no time to pass out with cold air soothing my heat-exhausted body.

Waking in the late afternoon, I discovered the L-shaped courtyard covered in vines and trees, allowing for continual shade against the heat of the June sun. My bike was safely parked in the courtyard; I made my way to the bar to the young man who had saved me with his magical lemon concoction and ordered another (with tequila this time). Sufficiently recovered, I headed out to discover the town and look for another perfect taco. Mulege, another mission town founded in the early 1700s and known for the beauty of the river that runs her length ending at the Sea of Cortez, her proud mission sets up on a hill overlooking the palm trees and river. Sadly not open, I wandered around the grounds taking in the softness of the sunset overlooking the river. I headed back to the town square, and with a food stand next to the market, I had a satisfying plate of carne asada tacos with the best beans I’ve had in Baja. Heading back to the hotel, I found the courtyard packed with locals and visitors enjoying the evening coolness. I was lucky to be greeted by the owner, I learned more about the hotel’s history, and I met a friend of his who could take me horseback riding the following morning. With plans set for the next day I gratefully slipped between the crisp white sheets, pulled my mosquito netting around me, and drifted off to sleep dreaming of the adventures ahead.

Outriding the Pandemic

It was April and it was warm, even for the Arizona desert. A steady easterly breeze made the heat of the mid-day sun tolerable. We roared down back roads of the high plains that curved in wide arcs, past abandoned tourists traps and teepee hotels from the golden age of auto travel. The boxer engines of our BMW GS’s were humming in unison, interrupted by the whisper of dust devils that would whirl in from nowhere and dance in the center-line like mini tornadoes. I twisted the worn black rubber grip of the throttle and let myself slip into a deep state of attention to what the moment required. I was fully bonded with the machine that hurled me northward toward an ice cold India Pale Ale and a desert campsite I had yet to meet.

It had been some time since I felt this content and at peace. Over the past three months my girlfriend Bobbie and I had been watching the world burn down around us. Our pandemic hideout in Mexico felt like a grandstand seat at the races, and we had been awaiting a fiery crash at the finish line. I soaked in the sun’s rays through my riding suit and rolled the throttle on, savoring the feeling of heading home after months of uncertainty. Although riding north that day on Highway 89 was a fleeting moment, it was one that clicked and whirred in my memory like a Polaroid snapshot of harmony and integration with my surroundings. I was liking the feel of the TKC70 tires gripping the hot asphalt as I leaned the heavy machine through the curves with precision. It was the first time these tires had gripped American blacktop in 10 weeks. I could still almost smell the breeze coming off the sea of Cortez mixed with a slight hint of burning garbage like you get in Mexico along with the promise of wild nights, like it was before the plague sent us all running for the shadows.

Five Weeks Earlier

I woke up next to a beautiful girl in a turquoise room. The sun’s rays filtered in through translucent white curtains, embroidered with the flowers and skulls of Mexico’s Day of the Dead.  Loreto is a colonial beach town on the inland side of the Baja Peninsula. The room, an Airbnb, was our home this week.  I woke up slowly from an abnormally deep sleep. I blinked several times and let the humming of the air conditioner and the slow building sound of traffic on the street outside remind me where I was. I felt the stiffness of a slight hangover in my body. I caught a flash of last night’s events: Augie’s bar. A roar of laughter and music, conversation. I remember going into it looking forward to the fresh lime and rock salt taste of Margaritas and catching up with a couple riding GS800’s who had been playing leapfrog with us for several days as we all made our way up the peninsula.

I don’t know if you know any soldiers, or infantry soldiers, or paratroopers for that matter but we have a way of taking things to excess. There are a lot of reasons for it. Human behavior experts will site the scientifically low levels of impulse control found in those who perform dangerous jobs. Some blame the adrenaline. Some say it’s testosterone (women have it too, so don’t even start). Whatever it is, I think it has something to do with getting whatever enjoyment you can from life, while you can. The couple with the GS800s had some spectacular stories of their travels. I was not one to pass up an opportunity to swap tales of two-wheeled adventure, or pass up the highly flammable margaritas at Augie’s.

I got out of bed quietly and filled the small, hotel-style coffee maker with bottled water and some ground coffee that was dark and smelled promising. I liked the room. Sunlight streamed in and reflected off the brightly colored tile floor. A pair of parakeets outside the door were saying “buenos dias” over and over again to me or maybe to each other. Either way, it sounded extra loud. I blamed the cocktails from the night before as I took that first magic sip of black coffee. I looked over at Bobbie. She was out, curled up, still in a deep sleep. I eased myself into a faux-leather love-seat and cracked open my laptop. I logged onto the VPN and started preparing to get some work done when the google news crawl hit me like a concussion grenade. The US State Department had raised its global travel advisory to Level Four, something that had never happened before. Not ever. The message left no room for interpretation: “Return home now or plan to hunker down wherever you are for an indefinite period of time.” This was Defcon Four, for real.

As those words sunk in, my phone began to chirp with messages from friends and family north of the border. They were trying to relay the CDC and State Department warnings, and trying to figure out where I was, and push for my hasty return. The world was officially in a biological crisis, something we had prepared for during my time in the 82nd Airborne but had always prayed would never really happen. A few moments later my boss messaged me about COVID-19 and wanted to know if I was safe and sheltering in place. I told her that well, I was in Mexico and wasn’t exactly sure what to do. She corrected me and said “You mean you are in New Mexico.” I told her well, no. I am in old Mexico, like the real Mexico, on the Baja Peninsula, looking out over the Sea of Cortez at that very moment. There really wasn’t much to say after that and I was left alone with my phone, which went back to chirping along with the parakeets. I took another sip of coffee. I had some decisions to make. Although living free has some incredible benefits, like, well… freedom, lightness of being and of course the eternal spontaneity, there is always the lurking fact that having too many options can create a kind of analysis paralysis. As a wise man once said “Many a false move was made by standing still.” Well for those of us who suffer from a lack of impulse control, standing still is not really an option. So I threw on my trusty Levis and prepared for action.

I stepped out into the street and realized that an eerie silence had settled in over the town. We had passed through this way about four weeks ago. At that time it had all the trappings of a Baja tourist town; the bustling bars, restaurants, crowed sidewalks, coffee shops and art galleries. The historic Spanish Mission settlement of Loreto was now a ghost town. The streets were empty. Most of the businesses had closed, and many displayed signs warning tourists to return to wherever they came from. Within a couple of hours the decision had been made. It was time to ride north.

We loaded up the BMWs and headed out on Highway 1 north towards Gringolandia. Highway 1 is one of the most beautiful roads I have ever been lucky enough to ride. You navigate perfectly paved mountain switchbacks, complete with barrel cactus and rattlesnakes sunning themselves on the road until you begin a gradual decline towards the sparkling aquamarine blue water of the Bay of Conception. We decided to camp at a pristine little cove called Playa Santispac, a few miles south of the little mission town of Mulege.

We set up camp in a beachfront palapa and I had just set about gathering firewood when a couple in an RV next door waved us over to join their fire. I could smell mouth-watering carne asada, seasoned to perfection sizzling over the flames so I dropped the firewood and said we’d be right over. As Bobbie and I moved into the firelight, we noticed another couple was already sunk comfortably into camp chairs at the fire, cold Coronas in hand. It took all of a second to realize we had met this couple a month prior. We had been navigating the dirt roads way down on the southern tip of Baja outside of Cabo Pulmo National Park. We had passed a couple of hours with these folks then, swapping stories and trading experiences and recommendations from the road. The world had still been a carefree and dreamy place a month ago, and I slipped for a second into thinking about how much had changed and how quickly. Now, enjoying a fire and a seaside campsite together, we picked up right where we had left off, telling stories of where we’d been and where we were going from here.  North. The best thing about that evening was that no one mentioned COVID-19, or the world beyond the glow of that campfire, or the anxiety that was steadily growing inside each of us.

We ate carne asada tacos right out of the cast iron pan and clinked shot glasses of tequila to the sound of small waves lapping the shore. I watched the last light of the sun disappear behind silhouetted palms and scattered  palapas to the west. I thought that Baja must be one of the world’s most beautiful places. It felt solitary and secure. It felt like it was ours. Without anyone saying it, we knew we were existing in a sort of bubble of denial. We were living a nostalgia for the carefree times, which have now given way to something else, something less innocent to say the least. Denial and tequila are a pretty good recipe for happiness, at least for a while, and we all enjoyed the warmth of each other’s company and the peace that campfire  afforded us, even if it was just for one night.

Threading the Needle

Definition: Safely navigating a path through significant or numerous obstacles, which may be either social, figurative or physical in nature. In base-jumping, threading the needle refers to passing through a narrow gap between terrain features, probably while wearing a wingsuit or squirrel suit which generates lift and allows a controlled descent that feels like flying. Wingsuit flights usually end in the deployment of a parachute, or in death.

If you follow my road journal, you will know that I have been living off my motorcycle for the past three years. One thing I have learned in that time and those miles is the value of building solid friendships with the many amazing people I have met. One of these people is the Airbnb host we had stayed with back in February when our Baja adventure was just beginning. Veronica reminded me of Blanche from the Golden Girls. She was a blonde American woman from California. She had a high style and a kind of radiant energy to her. There were numerous stories of lovers past and present, and affairs won and lost like battles to a soldier who has traveled the world. Veronica had recently retired from a nursing career, and she administered her Airbnb with a level of caring and perfection fitting to that career. Veronica had adapted quite readily to the slower paced life of the Baja in the safe little community of San Felipe. She was one of the warmest people we had met on this trip and I made a point to keep in contact with her over the next two months as Bobbie and I explored every inch of the peninsula on our bikes. When the pandemic started ramping up, she sent me a text message to check on us and, learning that we were still in Mexico, again offered us shelter at her home.

San Felipe was just a 2-hour ride to the border, which seemed like an option we did not want to turn our backs on if one of us were to come down with COVID. Additionally, it seemed like we could remain pretty well isolated in Baja. It was a peninsula; not counting the countless maritime options, there was really only one way on and one way off that thin little strip of sand. Even if you counted boats, access to Baja was a lot more controlled than say, Mexico City, and our beloved USA was starting to look like a full-on dumpster fire if the TV and internet news sources could be believed. Plus, from what we could see, the residents of Baja seemed to be more or less following the health protocols of the CDC and the World Health Organization. Our plan was to thread the needle and return to America once the cases flat lined there or started to decrease. So essentially, we planned to cross the border after the worst had passed in the US but prior to the virus wave hitting Baja, which we knew it eventually would. We feared if we stayed too long in Baja sooner or later as gringos, would be seen as part of the problem, and we would become persona non grata.

Our delayed evacuation plan was based on zero scientific data, but seeing the massive amounts of misinformation already circulating on the interwebs, a gut feeling was the only impulse we could trust. One thing was certain; we had to set up a secure forward operating base. Veronica’s house was located about three miles from the beach. It was the perfect place to wait and see which direction the world would go and an ideal launching point to counter most, if not all scenarios we came up with during an official risk assessment and brain storming session conducted over a bucket full of ice cold mini-Coronas.

For the next three weeks Bobbie and I fell into a kind of routine; sleep late, eat a leisurely breakfast while consuming worrisome world news and catching up on emails, ride to the beach. Routine can be a soothing thing when facing the end of the world as we know it in a country that is not your own, whose government could turn hostile on you at the drop of a sombrero. I thought of the thousands of Mexicans who make the daring run across the border every day and the hostility they have to face at every stage of the journey as we hovered over phones and laptop screens in our terracotta-and-pastel-stucco tactical operations center.

The big question was if and when to leave San Felipe and head for the border crossing at Calexico. There was no good advice and there were no right answers. The world had not seen a pandemic of this magnitude in a hundred-plus years. There was certainly no guidance for people in our unique situation, living off the meager possessions that could fit on the backs of our GS motorcycles far from home and making blind decisions that would affect (and possibly drastically shorten) our lives. During this period of limbo in San Felipe, I was continuously urged by family and friends to return home to America. These pleas were nonstop and utilized a progressive escalation of force and coercion. I was grateful for the concern of everyone, especially my mother, who has patiently put up with more stupid and risky adventures than any mother deserves to. I made my entry to adult life as a paratrooper and moved on from the Army to world travel to my present decision to live as a motorcycle vagabond. Although I am not much for looking in the rear-view, I regretted momentarily all I had put my Mother through every time I heard the worry in her voice over the phone, or sensed it between the lines of one of her text messages.

We received automatic updates from the State Department via email. These communiques were mostly just warnings to get the hell out of Dodge and come back stateside. I couldn’t help but think, “Come back to what?” Since there was no cure and the numbers were steadily rising, it made no sense to return. We looked at the numbers, the collapse of health services and the mounting uncertainty and unrest in our country. In light of all that, every risk analysis we did, whether fueled by tequila, beer or black coffee, all pointed to battening down the hatches and weathering the storm at Veronica’s Airbnb.

Once we made the decision to stay in San Felipe, we started to notice there was plenty going  in the community around us to cast some serious, escalating doubts on the very decision we had just made. The city was in a process of closing down and withdrawing from public life, just like we had seen in Loreto.  Beaches and public entertainment venues were fully closed and stores were boarding up one by one, making it more and more difficult to purchase food, booze and charcoal, all of which are non-negotiables. We ensured our gas tanks were always topped off and kept our gear semi-packed. We were ready to go kickstands up within 15 minutes of any breaking news that gave us a good enough reason to head north. The days started to blend together as I guess they did for a lot of people. I started to realize this was not going to be just another mini-crisis that passes, soon forgotten. The realization dawned on me that this was going to be a massive chapter in history, not only for North America, but for the world.

Through all the progressive shutting down of San Felipe, Baja and probably all of Mexico, one nearby beach remained open: Pete’s Camp. This was a 3-mile ride from our Airbnb base, and it was a priceless afternoon getaway where we could relax on miles of empty beach that faced the beautiful blue waters of the Sea of Cortez. At Pete’s Camp, my mind would drift, sometimes to the highest heights, memories of walking off the ramp of a C17 into clear blue Carolina skies. Other times it got dark on me, and I imagined a post-apocalyptic, post-COVID world. We didn’t know which way the world was going to go. We didn’t know if fear was going to dictate the next chapter in history or if courage and cooler heads would prevail. Occasionally there would be a lonely RV parked at the camp, making its their way north. Some were Canadians who still had a long road ahead. We would chat with these refugee travelers and worried retirees while awkwardly keeping our distance and trying to scavenge any credible news or credible rumors to supplement the politically partisan blamefest that we abused ourselves with daily online.

During a chat with a friendly couple of snowbirds from British Columbia we learned that the Mexican Federales were refusing to let travelers go south, which made sense for Mexico since, at that time, COVID-19 was still more of a problem in the US. Unfortunately for us, we had to ride south a little ways to get on the highway and head north. Heading due north from San Felipe led to nothing but open desert followed by a brick wall, or some kind of wall, known as the US border. So according to my land navigation skills, if we rode twenty miles east or west we would risk being turned around on general suspicion of wanting to head south. If we made it to the highway we could turn north, but if we failed to cross the border due to some kind of Homeland Security snafu or some other fuckup, we would likely not be allowed to return to San Felipe and our base at Vernonica’s because it would be, well… to the south. This scenario was not pleasant to think of. I imagined us being forced into a kind of fenced in refugee camp within sight of California soil, motorcycles confiscated, sitting cross legged on the ground, drinking rust colored water from cut-off Tecate cans. With that vision in my head, I suddenly started feeling some empathy for all the countless people who had been in this position every day for decades, trying to head north, with Mexico saying ‘go on, then’ and the US saying ‘whoa, not so fast’ and a hell of a lot less resources in their pockets than Bobbie and I had at that moment.

Boxed In

We were boxed in, for our own safety as the saying goes, as well as for the safety of everyone around us. I thought about how many times public safety had been used as the reason to keep people from doing what they wanted, whenever the heck they wanted to do it, which pretty much described my life since I left the military, and especially these last three years living off a motorcycle. Under normal conditions, being stuck in a situation like this would cause a significant amount of stress, and it did, but under the new COVID-19 circumstances, it gave us some peace of mind too. The fact was, there were about a thousand percent less people traveling the highways and byways of northern Mexico these days, and under the current circumstances, less people was good.

Although we knew how fortunate we were to be weathering this terrifying time in such a beautiful place, harsh reality began to seep into our lives. Bobbie’s company, which did seismic retrofitting in California, was all but lost. With the real estate market at a standstill, her client base had dried up almost overnight. My own work assignments were starting to dwindle. The thought of being laid off in the face of a full-on economic depression started to creep into our idyllic little Garden of Eden in the desert of northern Baja. After three weeks of sheltering in place at Veronica’s house in San Felipe, the mounting stress of inaction, as it is wont to do, became more painful than confronting our worst-case scenario. We decided to head for Bobbie’s house in Sedona, Arizona, about five hundred miles from our current location. Judging from the news, it seemed, at least for the first wave of this pandemic, that the incidence of new cases was stabilizing and even lowering in some places.

Green Light

Although we discussed new options every day, sometimes every hour, we committed; we decided to decide by Wednesday, the eighth of April. That would allow us a comfortable two days to pack, and we would leave out on Friday, the 10th and make it to Sedona by Saturday or Sunday at the latest. When Friday rolled around, we psyched ourselves up and told each other that it was finally time to leave. We said goodbye to Veronica, ensuring her that once we were safe in Sedona she was welcome to come and stay if the virus hit Baja as badly as we thought it would. We once again loaded the panniers covered with stickers from all the states we had visited. I leaned hard to the right against the added weight and let the kickstand flip up into place. We took a slight detour down the dusty dirt road we had ridden so many times to say a 60mph goodbye to the beach at Pete’s Camp. We were finally returning home to America.

New World

Contrary to my apocalyptic daydreams, we crossed the border without incident. We waited in an almost non-existent line that consisted of a few cars, pickups and RV’s and pretty soon we handed our passports to a friendly Customs and Border Protection officer wearing a surgical mask. He accepted our documents and gave them (and us) a once over, not too fast and not too slow. “Welcome home.” He said. I twisted the throttle and we picked up some of that quiet BMW speed, once again on good American asphalt.

It was still early and cool for Southern Arizona so we stopped at the first beige stucco and Spanish tile Starbucks that came into view. We dismounted and shook off the vibrations both real and metaphysical as we walked up to a sterile window, where we were handed two cups of drip coffee by a young girl wearing a contamination suit and the kind of face shield I’d use to grind the slag off a frame weld. We sipped bitter coffee and looked at each other in our new reality. I tried to stay focused on the beauty of our surroundings and the success of an easy border crossing back to our homeland. We had avoided the refugee camp scenario and I was very thankful and glad to be back on US soil.

Now that we were back in the United States, where were we supposed to go and how would we adapt to this scary new world order as motorcycle nomads? It was a relief to be back in our home country but to what avail? Everyone and everything was fully locked down. Almost nothing was open and no one had worked for weeks or months in some cases. It was a stark contrast to the America we knew just ten short weeks ago.  There would be no gatherings with friends and family at our favorite bistro, Vino’s in West Sedona, to share stories of our adventures in Baja. There would be no popping over to our favorite local watering hole for a cold Four Peak’s IPA while catching up local gossip. Although we had been living in the same isolation south of the border just yesterday, it felt different now being home, because now we owned the problem. Our country had been enjoying record high prosperity when we left just a few months ago, and record low unemployment. Now huge numbers of Americans were unable to work and didn’t know how they would pay their bills, rent and mortgages. We tried to keep the talk light and the mood upbeat as we set up a cozy little camp that afternoon in the Prescott National Forest. We could have ridden straight through, but we wanted to be alone that first night, inhaling the aroma of dry pine on the breeze as we sat around our small fire. We needed the strength and clarity that came from sleeping that first American night on the clean, coarse sand of the high Arizona desert.

A sobering reality set in the next morning as we rode from first light through the lonely desert, now more deserted than ever. The whine of my 1200cc boxer engine and the wind in my helmet were the only sounds on the surreal Arizona landscape that morning. As we blazed on with the rising sun to our right, it felt like our whole country was on a one-way road northbound to Sedona, which I hoped wouldn’t turn out to be a dead end. We continued north, avoiding the freeway, until the soft afternoon light came from the west. We felt the temperature drop a few degrees as we roared over Mingus Mountain Pass in the Coconino National Forest. We leaned extra low and deep into every curve, wanting the bike and the tires to be there for us, to reassure us and support us in this time of uncertainty. Motorcycle riding can give you perspective; it can make existential problems feel distant, forcing you to focus on the here and now. As we descended into the still air and the evening warmth of Sedona, the light of the setting sun shone on the rocks, giving them a warm kind of alpenglow I had never noticed before. I knew that here, in the warm, safe interior of America we would be able to find a moment of solace to shake off the culture shock, gather our thoughts, and lay out our options for putting one tire in front of the other and ask ourselves:  “Where to next?”  The world was changing, radically and on a daily basis. We needed a plan that would fit the need we had for constant motion. We found a lot of courage there in Sedona, in the familiarity of Bobbie’s house, which looked out over a seemingly infinite landscape of red rocks to the south. From that place of courage, I realized that the sun would indeed rise again. It would rise over Veronica’s little house where we had waited out the uncertainty of the first wave and it would rise over any lonely Canadian RVs still parked at Pete’s camp, facing the Sea of Cortez and the new normal. So would it rise over our lives tomorrow and over the lives of our people near and far. Since my days in the 82nd Airborne, failure has never been an option, and this was no time to start considering it. I broke out the bottle of Laphroaig and we began unrolling the maps. The Southwest Operations Center was now established. We got down to the serious business of where to next, knowing we’d be kickstands up in no time.

Seven Favorite Baja Destinations

Baja is a motorcycling paradise and I have a bunch of favorite destinations there.  Seven of them, to be precise, although truth be told, I like everything in Baja except for Tijuana and maybe La Paz and Loreto.  That said, my favorites are:

      • Tecate
      • San Quintin
      • Cataviña
      • Guerrero Negro
      • San Ignacio
      • Santa Rosalia
      • Concepcion Bay

So what’s so great about these places?  Read on, my friends.

Tecate

Tecate is the gateway to the middle of northern Baja, and it’s the easiest point of entry. Both Tijuana and Mexicali are too big and too complicated, and the Mexican Customs guys are too official in those bigger cities.  Tecate is a friendly place.  The last time I picked up a tourist visa in Tecate, the Customs officer tried to sell me salsa he and his family made as a side gig.  That’s what the place is like.  I love it.

If you’re into fine dining (not as in expensive dining, but just great food), it’s hard to go wrong anywhere in Baja.  Tecate has some of the best, from street taco vendors to Malinalli’s to Amore’s.  I could spend a week just in Tecate.  It’s that good.

The Tecate brewery dominate the Tecate skyline and is visible from just about anywhere in town. A can of ice cold Tecate with sea salt around the rim and a bit of lime juice…life doesn’t get any better.

San Quintin

San Quintin is 186.4 miles south of the border on Baja’s Pacific coast.  It’s usually a quiet ag town that has a lot of things going for it, including interesting hotels, good food, and Bahia San Quintin.  The Old Mill hotel and its associated restaurant, Eucalipto, is my personal favorite.  The hotel is about 4 miles west of the Transpeninsular Highway, and what used to be a harrowing soft sand ride to it is now easy peasy…the road is paved and riding there is no longer a test of your soft sand riding skills.  The Eucalipto restaurant is second to none.

What could be better than an ice cold Tecate overlooking Bahia San Quintin after a day’s riding in Baja? We once saw a California gray whale from this very spot.

You’ll notice at the top of my scribblings about San Quintin I said it is usually a quiet town.  The one exception for us was when there was a labor riot and we were caught in it.  The Mexican infantryman about 80 miles north of San Quintin told me the road was closed, but his English matched my Spanish (neither are worth a caca), and without me understanding what I was riding into, he let me proceed.  It’s not an experience I would care to repeat.  But it’s the only event of its type I ever experienced in Old Mexico, and I’d go back in a heartbeat.

The Cataviña Boulder Fields

Ah, Cataviña.  Rolling down the Transpeninsular Highway, about 15 miles before you hit the wide spot in the road that is Cataviña you enter the boulder fields.  Other-worldly is not too strong a description, and if the place wasn’t so far south of the border it would probably be used more often by Hollywood in visits to other planets.  The boulders are nearly white, they are huge, and the juxtaposition of their bulk with the bright blue sky punctuated by Cardon cactus.

I get a funny feeling every time I enter this part of Baja. Not funny as in bad, but funny as in I feel like I’m where I belong.  I once rolled through this region in the early morning hours with my daughter and she told me “you know, it’s weird, Dad.  I feel like I’m home.”  She understood (as in completely understood) the magic that is Baja.

I like the area and its stark scenery so much that one of my photos became the cover of Moto Baja!  I grabbed that shot from the saddle at about 30 mph on a CSC 150 Mustang replica, which I subsequently rode all the way down to Cabo San Lucas (that story is here).

You should buy a copy or three. They make great gifts.

Every time I roll through Cataviña with other riders, the dinner conversation invariably turns to how the boulders formed.   When I was teaching at Cal Poly Pomona, I asked one of my colleagues in the Geology Department.  He know the area as soon as I mentioned it.  The answer?  Wind erosion.

Guerrero Negro

The Black Warrior.  The town is named after a ship that went down just off its coast.    It’s a salt mining town exactly halfway down the peninsula, and it’s your ticket in for whale watching and the best fish tacos in Baja (and that’s saying something).  I’ve had a lot of great times in Guerrero Negro.  It’s about 500 miles south of the border.  You can see the giant steel eagle marking the 28th Parallel (the line separating Baja from Baja Sur) a good 20 miles out, and from there, it’s a right turn for the three mile ride west into town.  Malarrimo’s is the best known hotel and whale watching tour, but there are several are they are all equally good.  It you can’t get a room at Malarrimo’s, try the Hotel Don Gus.

It’s worth the 500-miles trek to Guerrero Negro just to savor Tony’s fish tacos. You might think I’m exaggerating. But like I said above…I’m not.
Man does not live by fish tacos alone, so for breakfast or dinner, it’s either the restaurant at Malaririmo’s or the San Remedio, a block north of the main drag into town. You won’t be disappointed at either.

After you leave Guerrero Negro and continue south, the Transpeninsular Highway turns southeast to take you diagonally across the Baja peninsula. About 70 miles down the road (which is about half the distance to the eastern shores of Baja and the Sea of Cortez along Mexico Highway 1) you’ll see the turn for San Ignacio.  It’s another one of Baja’s gems.

San Ignacio

San Ignacio is an oasis in the middle of the desert that forms much of Baja.  The Jesuits introduced date farming to the region hundreds of years ago, and it’s still here in a big way.  Leave Guerrero Negro, head southeast on Mexico Highway 1, and 70 miles later you run into a Mexican Army checkpoint, a series of switchbacks through a lava field, and when you see the date palms, turn right.

An oasis is usually formed by a volcano, and when a volcano is done discussing politics, it forms a lake. That’s the San Ignacio volcano and its lake, visible on the left as you ride into town.

Dates? Nope, not on that trip, but dates are one of the things San Ignacio is known for. I’ll bet they are delicious.

San Ignacio has a town square that’s right out of central casting, there’s a little restaurant that serves the best chile rellenos in all of Mexico (I’m not exaggerating), and the place just has a laid back, relaxing feel about it.

Santa Rosalia

You know, this town is another one of Baja’s best kept secrets.  As you travel south on Highway 1, San Ignacio is the first town you encounter after traveling diagonally across the peninsula.  Folks dismiss it because it’s an industrial town, but they do so in ignorance.  There’s a lot of cool stuff in this place.

The ride into Santa Rosalia a few years ago with novelist Simon Gandolfi, Arlene Battishill, J Brandon, John Welker, and yours truly. That’s a dead fish I’m holding.  We did a round trip to Cabo San Lucas on 150cc Mustang replicas, just to say that we could.

One of the things that’s unique about Santa Rosalia is the all-wooden architecture.  The town was originally built by a French mining company (Boleo) and they built it they way they did in France.  Like the Hotel Frances, which sits high on a mesa overlooking the town and the Sea of Cortez.  I love staying there.

There’s a cool mining musuem a block or two away from the Frances, and it’s worth a visit, too.

There are many cool things in Santa Rosalia, and one of the best is the Georg Eiffel church.  It was designed by the same guy guy who did the Eiffel town.

I’ve heard people dismiss Santa Rosalia as a gritty, industrial place not worth a stop.   Trust me on this:  They’re wrong.  It’s one of my favorite Baja spots.

Bahía Concepción

Concepción Bay is easily the most scenic spot in Baja.  It’s just south of Mulege (another delightful little town, and the subject of an upcoming ExNotes blog).  Bahía Concepción runs for maybe 20 miles along the eastern edge of the Baja peninsula.  I’ve seen whales from the highway while riding along its edge, the beaches are magnificent, and the photo ops just don’t stop.  The contrast between the mountains and Cardon cactus on one side and the pelicans diving into bright green water is view from the saddle you won’t soon forget.

Favorite Baja Hotels: Mulegé’s Historico Las Casitas

We’re starting a new series here on ExNotes, and it’s one I think you’ll enjoy:  A series on our favorite hotels in Baja.  There are some great places to stay in Baja, and unlike hotels here in the US, they are not part of any big hotel chains.  I love exploring Baja, and the hotels are part of the experience.

That’s enough introduction…let’s get to my all time favorite Baja hotel first:  The Las Casitas Hotel in Mulegé.  It’s the hotel you see those little CSC-150 Scooters parked in front of in the big photo above.

Mulegé is a special place.  It’s about 630 miles south of San Diego, and you can get to it by either riding south from Tijuana on Mexico Highway 1, or you can take what is now a paved road all the way down from Mexicali on the Sea of Cortez side.  Either ride is stunning.

One note we always add on any Baja story is to make sure you have Mexican insurance before you enter Baja.  Our recommendation is to go with BajaBound (the insurance we always use).

Mulegé is one of my favorite towns in Baja, and the Las Casitas just adds to the experience.  It’s not hard to find.  Just bear to the right at the first fork in the road as you enter Mulegé and you’ll be there (the official address is Valle Vadero 50 Colonia Centro 89518 Mulegé, Baja California Sur, Mexico).  But like I said, it’s not that hard to find, and if don’t find it immediately, you’ll like riding around in Mulegé. The Las Casitas has two locations…the original one, and then one a block or two away.  The original location includes a bar and a restaurant, and when I’m in Mulegé I put both to good use.

Francisco Javier Aguiar Zuñiga is the proprietor (he has been for 40 years).  Javier is an all around nice guy.  If you’re going there with a group, let him know and he’ll prepare a special meal.  I’ve done that on group tours I’ve led through Baja, and every meal at the Las Casitas has been a treat.

You know, I looked through my photos for the restaurant, and to my great surprise, I could only find a couple.  I think that’s an indication of just how good things are there…the hospitality and the cuisine are so fabulous (and I enjoy both so much) that I only had my camera out a couple of times.  The breakfasts are outstanding, too…Javier always has fresh orange juice ready to go, and trust me on this, you want to try it.

The Las Casitas has a central courtyard that is distinctly tropical in appearance and feel, and for good reason:  Mulegé is only a few miles north of the Tropic of Cancer, where the tropics officially begin.  Javier will let you park your motorcycle into the courtyard, although I don’t know that it’s necessary.  On one of my trips, we overindulged in Negro Modelos and margaritas in the Las Casitas lounge and left our bikes parked on the street that night.  They were just fine the next morning.

The town calls itself “Heroica Mulegé.”  During a dinner at the Las Casitas one evening I was telling the story behind that name.  The Heroica part has to do with the Mexicans holding off a much larger military force, except as I relayed the tale I couldn’t remember who they were fighting.  “It was you,” Javier politely reminded me, and indeed it was.  All this happened during the 1846-1848 Mexican-American War.  As you might guess, relations have improved since then.

When you visit, be sure you make time to stop by the Misión Santa Rosalía de Mulegé (it’s one of the original Baja missions).

Mulegé also has an historic prison that is now a museum.  Let me tell you how good life was (and is) in Mulegé:  Back in the day, prisoners were allowed to leave during the day to work, and the prison had no bars.  Things were so good in Mulegé that no one (including the prisoners) wanted to leave.  I can understand why.  You will, too, when you visit this magnificent little gem of a town and the Las Casitas Hotel.   They are two of Baja’s best kept secrets.

One more thing…if you’re making the trek into Baja, you’ll want to capture great photos, folks.  You want a good single lens reflex digital camera for an adventure like Baja, and Nikon’s D3500 is one of the best.  It’s what I shoot.  Gresh works his magic with a comparable Canon digital camera, and they’re good, too.

Mulege’s Las Casitas Hotel

I have several places I like to stay in Baja, and one of those is the Las Casitas Hotel in Mulege.    (Mulege is pronounced Mool-a-hay, with the accent on the “hay” syllable; it’s not mule-lidge as I sometimes hear gringos say.)  I could give you directions and an address for Las Casitas, but it’s really not necessary.  Mulege is a small town along Baja’s Transpeninsular Highway and the Las Casitas Hotel is easy to find.  Just take a left into town under the arch as you’re traveling south on the Transpeninsular (the main, and in many cases only, road through Baja), head into town, and sort of bear right when you come to a fork entering this interesting little village.

My good buddy Javier is the hotelier at Las Casitas.  He’s a guy about my age, we became friends as soon as we met, and he’s just a plain old good guy.  You know what I’m talking about.  Sometimes you meet somebody and you like them immediately, and for me, Javier is a guy like that.  That photo you see above with the Heroica Mulege arch?   It was erected to commemorate the actions of a small band of Bajaenos who held off a large group of invading seaborne soldiers.   I was telling that story at dinner in the Las Casitas one night and I couldn’t remember who the invaders were.  “It was you, the Americans,” Javier reminded me, and we all had a good laugh.

Las Casitas has a bar and a restaurant, and if you’re traveling with a group, Javier has no problem setting up a world class meal to keep the gang happy.   I’ve had seafood dinners, chile rellenos (my favorite Mexican dish), and more.   Javier does a great breakfast, too, and the coffee is superb.  The real treat, though, is the fresh-squeezed orange juice.  It’s worth riding the 700 miles south just that alone.

Las Casitas has a tropical feel to it, and that’s not surprising as Mulege is damn near in the tropics (the Tropic of Cancer, the northern edge of what officially constitutes the tropics, is just a few miles further down the down from Mulege).  The hotel rooms are arranged in two rows with an enclosed courtyard, and Javier’s okay with parking the bikes in the courtyard at night just outside the courtroom.  It’s really not necessary as there’s little crime in Baja (and on more than one occasion, infused with sufficient amounts of 100% blue agave Tequila and the inevitable accompany bottles of Negra Modelo, I’ve left my motorcycle parked on the street with no problems).  But it’s a nice touch to be able to bring the bikes into the courtyard.

The little town of Mulege is an oasis along the Rio Mulege, and it’s one of Baja’s date-farming centers.  It would be a crime against nature to not stop at Mulege’s ancient mission, 1700s-era church still in daily use.

Writing this blog on this fine Friday morning, I am realizing I need to get my knees in the Baja breeze again.  Maybe that feeling will pass, and maybe it won’t.  We’ll see.
